First electric car with cheap sodium-ion battery offers 157 miles of range as it appears out of a VW partnership

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/First...appears-out-of-a-VW-partnership.697298.0.html

"The first generation of mass-produced sodium-ion batteries has been installed in a production electric car for the first time. The model is part of VW's joint venture Sehold brand in China and can cover 157 miles on a charge with the Na-ion battery that is much cheaper and safer than its lithium counterparts."

Looks like the Chinese and Germans beat us to it. While Americans keep fighting about the green energy future, with a significant portion of the population abhorring EVs, our international competitors come up with solutions to the "lithium problem" of energy storage.

Sodium-ion batteries are now becoming commercially available, with prices as low as $80 per kWh, about 1/4 of that of the cheapest lithium-ion batteries of similar capacity. Say goodbye to lead acid, say hello to the future of cheap energy storage.

With those kind of energy storage prices, off-grid home solar might become a real possibility. With 10 kWh of backup battery power, it should be easy to get through the night. Think about the possibilities of never receiving an electricity bill again. This should be a dream for the self-sufficient individualists.

Wow, 157 miles. Quadruple that and fix all the other inherent performance shortcomings of an EV and I might be impressed.

    But probably not.

I personally am not big on EVs but this battery tech is impressive.

157 miles isn't going to convince many in the US to buy it.

I'm sure US companies are doing plenty of battery research, because there is money to be made from it.

Ah, yes. the naysayers are already out in full force, as predicted.

You realize that this car is not designed for a coast-to-coast road trip. It's a daily COMMUTER car. Oh, btw, it's also only $10,000.

In any case, the issue is not the range, which can clearly be scaled up. The issue is the commercial viability of cheap sodium-ion batteries.

Any “real world” on weight, lifespan, size, charging time?
A 75 mile radius will work for certain vehicles some of the time. As long as you don’t have to tow your battery behind you, it is interesting and worth improving.

If they could get a system down that was practical where people could just pop out a battery and replace it, they could just set up exchange stations like we have with propane tanks.

Something like that might get more people in the US interested in electric cars. I'm sure people smarter than me are already working on something like that, or know why something like that would never work.

They're about as fraudulent as dogecoin and all of that other nonsense and garbage. These EV's are a poor waste of science and technology.

Hell, nay sayers! You managed to set the milage of the EV back 150 miles in one post LMFAO :)

There are a number of EV manufacturers that are just releasing their new models. All EVs will go down in price while battery technology gets better, while the ICE has reached its limits.

Hey, you, too, will swap out your lead acid battery in your gas guzzler with sodium ion, when it's half the price and lasts 10-times as many charging cycles. Just give it time, acceptance of modern times comes slowly.

It would probably also require some type of regulation requiring standardization of batteries. Otherwise, you are going to need to keep track of all kids of different batteries.

They should get ahead of that, and not let it end up like phone chargers with proprietary connections.

I am all for the battery swapping method. Of course, the problem with this is that the car owner wouldn't actually own the battery, but rather lease it from the charging/battery company. It still might be a good model, because it could make the actual car price much cheaper. Of course, there would have to be a fee for leasing the battery on top of the cost of charging.

I'm sure similar problems with standardization of fueling equipment etc. arose when we switched from horse buggies to cars. Those problems can be overcome. However, most likely the naysayers have to die off first, just like the horse and buggy proponents when the first ICE cars came along.

It could be like the propane tank exchanges, where you buy the first tank, then just leave the empty tank behind and pay for the cost of the propane in a filled one. You technically always own the tank you have, but you had to turn in one to get the next one.

I am sure that there will need to be some type of control in place to ensure that the battery being exchanged is functional, but that can probably be worked out.

The problem is that ANY kind of battery ages with increasing charge/discharge cycles. I wouldn't want to get a battery that has already gone through 5000 cycles and was abused by the previous owners. Oh well, I guess smarter minds are thinking about these issues already, and how to solve them.

Offers 157miles for how long. I am sure after a couple years, that will change.

yea, they would have to put in regulations that deal with that. Maybe have come type of counter that keeps up with how many times it's been charged, or the age of it.

To heck with the EV. I want to be able to inexpensively replace my deep cycle batteries in my boat and motorhome and for them to be able to become discharged and be able to be re-charged. Until my pipe dream becomes reality, I'll keep using wet batteries
