it might take sherlock holmes to find the "grooming" in that one. perhaps desantis thinks that if florida's children learn logic and deductive reasoning they may go to disney land?

we did "midsummer nights dream" in high school. puleeeze. shakespeare is essential for educated americans. and milton? if you have never read and discussed "paradise lost" how can you ever claim "western civilization" as a value?

Florida schools remove books by John Milton and Toni Morrison and restrict Shakespeare under DeSantis rules (msn.com)

so here is my challenge : please post one of the offensive passages from any of the books listed in this new ban.

The article says they've been "temporarily pulled for review".

    Just to be clear.

Probably by people that didn't read it in school.

No really! There honestly are people who have never read it! Secret Adultery? Oh heavens to Betsie!

But I'll just believe anything as long as it's in line with my political views.

What goes around comes around. Florida under its present Governor is an example of the actions of 'Big Government' castigated by 'conservatives'.

Anecdotal note. When posted to Sheppard AFB years ago, I found among the books in the base library a copy of Mein Kampf. I did not consider it unusual.

Yet was the book on the selves before and is the book on the shelves now? Whatever semantic you choose the classic book is no longer available to the students.

    Not sure.
Or it is. I won't take anything people claim on this sort of thing for granted.

    Hi, StillBlue.

    An apt quote, that.

A self-described secular humanist, I stand somewhere outside [Ed.: That's outside, not above,] the reds and blues. I make it a practice to listen to and read the commentaries of both sides. Only in that way can I accurately assess the worth of my position. I must note that I find some of the political palaver of 'conservative' AM radio talk show hosts risible.

Side note: When I first began listening to 'conservative' talk radio I was awed by how the producers selected and scripted the phone-in 'callers'. Then, some time later, I realized the callers weren't a hired part of the staff.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

According to the article the books haven’t been banned. They’ve been pulled for review for possible banning due to the states new restrictive law, which if true is beyond pathetic.

The actions taken regarding the Dr. Seuss books came as a result of a decision by Dr. Seuss Enterprises to stop the publication of the books due to "insensitive" content. The other books you mention were taken off required reading lists but are still available to students.
I'm okay with the idea of making some books age appropriate as long as the deciding body has some expertise in the field. But the idea that a single parent in FL can get a book banned is as wrong as it is dangerous. Welcome to the world of RonDon. Who is for book banning while using a homophobic ad all but calling for trans people to be eliminated.

You should read the links I provide for your education...

"Chicago libraries are temporarily pulling six Dr. Seuss books from their shelves after Dr. Seuss Enterprises said it would stop publishing them over racist and insensitive imagery."

suess, and his corporation, are private citizens. can your government force them to publish the racist books?"

hypothetical. suppose twain had written a pornographic novel during his travels on the mississippi. if he is rightly ashamed, couldn't he ask the librarians to take it off the shelf between huck finn and tom sawyer?

I did. "Chicago libraries are temporarily pulling six Dr. Seuss books from their shelves after Dr. Seuss Enterprises said it would stop publishing them over racist and insensitive imagery." That's what I said.

I never said anything about the publisher halting publication. That's another discussion.

Just transfer control of all the funding to the parents and guardians of children and allow all credentialed teachers to organize and run their own independent schools wherever they like. Problem solved.

    what problem?
put cameras in the classroom so the parents can see what their little angels are up to all day. maybe they will get off the teachers' backs.

ANYONE accusing a teacher of "grooming" or whatever needs to file charges and let the system work. there are bad teachers, but these current blanket accusations of the profession are stupid, and wrong.

"What problem?" The problem you were complaining about: censorship in schools.
