It seems football is often in the news these days. I don't mean tales of Bubbah's great pass. I mean stories about what a terrible thing football is: players, coaches, and owners express Politically Incorrect opinions; players commit crimes; players suffer brain injuries, knee injuries, and more because they're exploited by an unconscionable business. You may add others. It seems no chance is being missed by the media to make football look bad.

    Why?

It's not because any of the complaints are new. Players have always been injured, and have never been celebrated for their social grace. So why now?

I think the answer lies with the hostility of the left to all that's American, and of course the complicity of most journalists. People noticed that football was central to the America the left hates: confident, aggressive, masculinist, played by organized teams, loved by millions of working and middle class people. The Kennedys played touch football; Obama plays "hoops." George Bush was a cheerleader for the Yale football team; John Kerry was on the Yale fencing team. I don't think it's far-fetched to say the left wants to undermine football because football is a big part of the traditional American culture. What better way to demoralize the United States?

I must add that I have no interest in spectator sports, including football. I've never watched a football game all the way through, and always have to ask which teams are playing in the Super Bowl. This doesn't lessen my desire to protect football and its millions of fans.
