Many have read or heard the myth of the frog placed in a pot of water and the water slowly heated until the frog dies.* The frog doesn't realize that the water is gradually becoming too hot for survival.

While it's a myth, the concept of not recognizing changing surroundings until those surroundings become lethal is a useful one. It maps nicely on to our American form of democracy and the government informed by it these days.

We are witness to slowly increasing distrust by the American public in the structures of our government. This has two sources. The first is the attack on the trustworthiness of those institutions by some of our politicians. The second is how some within those structures have violated the norms of the behavior expected of them, using their office to personal advantage.

When such attacks from within go without consequence and correction, we become inured. Our democracy crumbles about us. Its place is usurped by authoritarian rule.

Americans and mythical frogs do have something in common.

    Side note.

Americans are not alone in this regard. The slow and, at times not so slow crumbling of democratic institutions in nations can be seen in a number of contemporary countries. Hungary, Egypt, India, and even to some extent Israel, by those who care to look. Others can be cited.
