A line that I always remember from the Roseanne show- tried to find the transcript but can't but found someone else had described the scene well enough:

i loooove the show roseanne and in one scene, martin mull's character comes out as gay to dan conner (roseanne's t.v. husband) and his poker buddies. everyone at the table becomes instantly uncomfortable, but also wants mull's character to feel at ease. one of them tries to put him at ease by assuring him that he also knows a gay person, "his name is bob. he lives in chicago. maybe you know him?"

Martin Mull responds with something like "Gay Bob from Chicago? Sure we all know him".

For that era, that was pointed political commentary.

As noted on another thread....you have a generation coming along, yes even on the Political Right...

who grew up watching "Will & Grace".

While the Social Cons can scream "media indoc'ternation!!!!!"...they can't deny that they're losing.

BTW, it was "Bill"...not "Bob". From the episode "When Jackie Becomes a Trucker"

Chuck Mitchell: [Leon has just told the poker group that he's gay] W-W-Well, y-y-you know, um, I-I-I know a gay guy. I, uh, his name's Bill. H-H-He lives in Chicago. M-M-Maybe you know him?

Leon Carp: Yeah, yeah, sure I know him. From Chicago. Gay Bill.

    Dan: Smooth, Chucky.

Chuck Mitchell: What? Nobody else was sayin' anything!

It's funny to see the PROGRESS on TV of gay characters...and ever decreasing "outrage" of the homophobic.

I can remember when "Soap" started in the late 1970s and Anita Bryant and Falwell and the rest of them were calling for boycotts of ABC over Billy Crystal playing an openly gay character.

And I'll bet you some of the Church Ladies from back then?.....are big fans of Ellen DeGeneres' show today.

Earring Magic Ken was way 'gayer' than the Gay Bob doll.

I love Ellen.... I don't watch her show... but strictly as a comedian... holy crap, she's funny. She also does great voiceover work for charectors like Dori on Finding Nemo.

she's also a lot more tolerable than Rosie O'Donnell.

Still doesn't mean I support her politics.

Well not sure about you, but I was born with genitals, so basically I was exposedto them from my birth. do most boys just sprout them in their 18th birthday? That wasn't the way it worked for me. I wasn't a eunuch.

Gay Bob seems to be a bit older than magic erring ken. Less of a pretty boy also.

doesn't mean a 5 y.o. boy needs an anotomically correct Ken doll. That is purely agenda driven.
