    The verdict is in, and for the next day or two, people are going to very passionate about it. The temperature in here is going to get pretty high sometimes, and there's just no way around that.

    As of Sunday morning, here's the way we're going to try to handle that. We want to let the discussions run their course with as little moderator interference as possible, but there will have to be some ground rules. We will not relax our standards on -

    Personal attacks or insults
    Racial slurs
    Incitement to violence
    Trolling, taunting, or baiting other posters into an emotional response - such as, "well, you (fill in the blank) are all a bunch of psychopaths anyway", or posts of that nature.

    Aside from that, we're going to try to let everything just unfold as it may. That means it's going to get ugly in here sometimes, but ugly is not against the rules, and people who post on this subject over the next couple of days are just going to have to accept that. Some people are going to say some very unpleasant things, and express some very offensive opinions, but as long as they stay within the guidelines I've outlined, those posts are going to stand.

    People need to keep in mind that just because someone says something really unpleasant, it's not necessarily a personal attack or a racial slur. If you participate in one of the Zimmerman threads, you're going to need a thick skin. Sorry, but that's just the nature of political discussions sometimes. It gets hot, and today's going to be a scorcher.

    Now. On the flip side... once a poster does cross the line, we're probably going to be a lot less tolerant than we might otherwise be. We just won't have the time to warn someone 3 or 4 times that they're going too far. People may find themselves thread-banned very suddenly if they violate the guidelines. We're going to be extremely busy trying to keep up with all of this. We want to work with you, but we need you all to work with us and meet us halfway.

    I applaud your hands on approach, to remain hands off. A lot of boards make sweeping rules to address certain subjects that end up damaging the draw they have. I like dealing with circumstances as they unfold. It is a novel approach which should, well implemented, preserve the integrity of the board in all respects.

    Still think it would be nice if mods addresses all the trayvonites accusing everyone of racism. Trolls every thread and ruins and civil discussion .

    I am essentially staying away from all the Trayvon threads- too much overblown hyperbole for me. I just haven't seen much room for rational discussion.

    So- guess the upshot is- glad you are letting people vent- I will avoid it.

    Karma, I'm sorry, but I've been the only mod online most of the day. I'm trying to keep up with it, but I'm missing a lot of posts because they're posting ten times as fast as I can read. Please just report 'em, and we'll try to get to them as fast as we can.

    Thanks, Ctrl. This sort of challenge is a test of who you are as a community. If we can't find a way to talk about this issue, what are we even here for? Our role as staff is to find ways to make the discussion possible, and to do it in a way that limits it as little as possible. Under extreme circumstances, sometimes you have to stretch the rules, not tighten them up. It'll be a delicate balance, but if people just make a sincere effort to meet us halfway, we can keep it going.

    I'm doing pretty good right now. I've managed to survive more than a week without getting banned.

    We'll see how long I last this time. :roflol:

    I have to agree. Seems they want people who are passionate about politics to come here and act like they are overdosed with valium.
