    HYPERLINK has the full article

    snip

General Motors will lay off a total of 1,314 employees at two factories in Michigan in connection to ending production of vehicles, according to the Detroit Free Press........

    end snip

this is great news as these folks can elect to sell their home in what will become a depressed area, move to a new location for GM or, grab a job at Starbucks and remain local.

The fact that these choices are now available to 1,314 folks is awesome.

All Automakers are going to be in trouble shortly.

Sales of EV's globally are up and no one is buying ICE vehicles in China, the LARGEST vehicle market in the world.

The use of ICE and Fossil Fuels is reaching a point were it will no longer be cost effective to commute using ICE vehicles.

The latest battery technology breakthroughs are UNPRECEDENTED.

Greely is selling the Zeekr 007 after Xmas in the EU and it is BETTER than the Tesla Model S as far as battery range and technology is concerned. It can RECHARGE 300+ miles of range in 15 minutes using standard chargers and it has a more powerful charger that can recharge even more range that that in just THREE minutes.

ICE is going the way of the horse and buggy, only a matter of time now.

Yes, keep up with the changes or get run over.
I also wondered how this will impact the Middle East countries. Many are focused mainly on one business, oil, and they don't have a great backup plan. Dubai has a alternate plan, but is finding out they will have to change their religious rigors to actually become a tourist center, as their "rules" are adverse to most other non-muslim countries.
A greatly reduced oil business may cause even more turmoil in an already volatile area.
Back to the OP @sec , I would have never guessed you were anti-capitalist. Should the government step in and take over the car business to keep a dying industry active? Confused about your complaint.

complaint? I stated that it's great news. These @1,314 folks with new-found freedom can explore opportunities in serving espressos or even french fries. It's great when folks who have grown complacent are given the chance to explore lucrative fields in food service. As for your opinion on internal combustion engines; have fun with that

Duh, I don't know why these companies invest in electric trucks. It should be no secret that the truck lovers hate EVs and the EV lovers hate trucks (well, it's an oversimplifcation, but you get the point). And, then, there is the self-driving car unit that is getting shut down. Seems like the hype about self-driving cars being mainstream in a few years was vastly overblown, and while it is relatively easy to make a self-driving car, it is REALLY difficult to make one that doesn't crash once every 50,000 miles, or even never crashes due to software/hardware glitches.

Of course, instead of looking behind the reasons for these layoffs, it is much easier to scream "Biden did this". I am just wondering, what would Trump have done that would have prevented these layoffs? Oh, and claiming that he wouldn't have shut down the non-existent XL pipeline doesn't cut it as an argument.

who the F is blaming Biden or Trump? Why not celebrate the @1,314 folks who are now free of the daily grind and can explore other situations, perhaps working a fast food counter at your college?

Well, all your "Dem votes have consequences, always harmful" lines don't indicate that you are blaming Biden and Dems? At least, don't play us for fools. It only further undermines what little credibility you have left.

show me where i posted anything about harmful Democrat policies within this thread. As for credibility among you and other loyal Democrat voters on this forum; do you think I give a rats behind? On topic- do you think there are any job openings in the restaurants at your student union building? Maybe some of the 1,314 recently released folks might find employment at your campus

While Climate Commies celebrate putting those people out of work, I couldn't help but notice this little nugget from your article:

Those cuts are related to GM's October announcement that it was delaying production of two all-electric pickups at the plant by a full year and transferring nearly 1,000 workers to other GM facilities in Michigan.

Evidently, the demand for EVs isn't what some people would have us believe...

I am a truck guy. Its not that truck guys hate EVS; its that EVs do not perform the same function. I take my family on camping trips. I tow a 30 foot 5th wheel filled with motorcycles, 100 gallons of water, and supplies. EVs limit drivers to short trips and light payloads.

and how the heck will our motorhome be able to travel 350 miles in a day pulling our car behind us if it was electric?

What about being offshore in our boat ? Will Sea Tow come out with a Tesla charger?

It's not about EV, it's about the price of new vehicles. I have a buddy that's been a dealer for over twenty years and recently quit for a job at Walmart. He says, it's impossible to sell a truck at 100k plus and expect to make commissions.. Then there is the wait time, some models have a six month delivery time.

The entire economy has spired out of reach for the average consumer.. My first home was a new raised tri-level, four bed, two bath and wired sheet rocked full basement $68,400  Now you can't even get a decent work truck for that..

Most young American will never own a home to plug an EV in to ;)

I agree that internal combustion is going to be obsolete in a matter of time, but you're buying nonsense here. You can calculate the amount of energy required to move that car 300 miles ignoring things like friction and brake regeneration. If you know the voltage and amperage of a standard Chinese outlet you can calculate the amount of time needed to charge the battery if the efficiency is 100%. There's a reason Teslas charge faster at superchargers than they do at your house, and no battery is going to change that math.

Chinese EV manufacturers have been lying about their cars' capabilities for years son.

I drive a Tundra. I need it to tow my boat, which is far and away the most fuel inefficient vehicle I own. Toyota did away the with 5.7L V8 so I don't know what I'm going to do when I want to buy a new truck.

We also have a Cayenne hybrid that my wife drives. I imagine we'll look at full EV's for our next purchase.

What would Trump have done? Simple, he wouldn't have made the butt stupid decision to allow EPA to regulate ICE out of existence. Both Biden and previously Obama have been rabid about that idiocy.

What you're seeing here is just the start of the collapse of the industry in this country. And, no, China is irrelevant to the US market. They've never made a vehicle able to be certified for sale in this country and I seriously doubt they will start now.

Hopefully in June EPA's authority is obliterated and the country comes to their senses. EVs can't compete with ICE on a level, competitive playing field. Technically EVs suck at actual work as several posters have already indirectly alluded to. Ain't nothing gonna change that.

Here's hoping Loper comes through to prevent complete descent into dystopia.

If I recall correctly the Saudi's are investing heavily in Solar farms on the expectation that they can EXPORT surplus electricity to the EU nations and charge higher rates in the colder months.

Technically speaking the entire north African coastline could be turned into solar farms and power both the EU and the rest of Africa.

The new liquid salt storage batteries are scalable to store enough energy to provide 24*7 power output.

Only thing stopping that from happening is money and that will appear when the demand on governments exceeds their abilities to placate their electorates.

NASA just developed a Solid State battery that is light enough that enough of them could lift an airliner off the ground.

    https://www.nasa.gov/aeronautics/na...esearch-exceeds-initial-goals-draws-interest/

More about how it works for planes at this link...

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/nasa...-state sulfur, harmful pollutants into the air.

The PAYLOAD experts at NASA have hit PAYDIRT with this breakthrough.

Ultra safe, ultra powerful, ultra lite AKA the gold standard when it comes to batteries.

A pickup with those batteries would easily handle your weekend activities. Just don't hold your breath waiting for the Big Three to produce them. Odds are they will just buy them in bulk from China and rebadge them in Michigan and pocket the PROFITS.

Both true, but we are talking Fish and Potatoes... Can't imagine the UK shouldn't be able to work both of those out locally...

Seems to be the other costs that are working against this age old industry. Still to this day, the best "street" fish and chips I've ever had was in Ireland (close enough).... Makes me sad to think you have to pay double digits for a couple of pieces of fish and fried spuds...

I was a young person when Jimmy Carter was President and mortgage loans were double digits. I thought I would never own a house. But then an amazing thing happened. Ronald Reagan was elected and soon thereafter I owned a house.

China, the first and last name in GARBAGE. Buyer beware ;) They lie about every product and when it doesn't performe or work as advertised, the consumer gets hosed...

Not saying these cars will follow the trends of Chinese goods, but history doesn't paint a rose history of Chinese crappy product..
