Hi all, I stumbled across this forum searching for reviews of John Shelby Spong's 'The Sins of Scripture' The web is a strange place. I notice the usual collection of fundamentalist true believer with little or no knowledge of modern biblical scholarship. I've learnt not to bother over much with discussing issues with these people as logic carries no weight with them. I was a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front in the late 1970's ( yes, I'm that old) and was involved in the battle with government here in the early days of the AIDS epidemic working also as a member of a number of AIDS care teams. More recently I've been involved in a struggle to have the various Psychological Practices Acts in Australia amended to ban gay aversion therapy. The gay community here by and large don't want to touch the issue with a barge pole. Anyhow, I might hang around for a while if the fundamentalists don't give me the sh**ts. See ya, D M

Remember, if someone annoys you to the point of apoplexy, hit the ignore button on them and they just disappear from your world. Nice! Thanks for the welcome - however - - - - - - - I've already had the freedom of expressing my views castrated. I choose to describe myself as a 'F.A.G.' yet your software does not permit me to do so. Considering I wasn't insulting anyone, and certainly not myself as I take pride in owning the assignation, where is the freedom of expression in such censorship? Oh, and I notice I've mispelt 'leaning' as 'leanting' in my subject heading - sorry.
Welcome to the forum, that's certainly an interesting history there. And yes it is unfortunate that this forum bans "swear" and "naughty" words and I have asked the administrators if there is anyway to have this reversed. Time will tell.

A straight hippie? Somewhat of a contradiction in terms mate. However, during our ear I found so called straight men far more easily seduced than now and that's not just because of AIDS. Something has changed for the worst from my perspective although I've always been more than a bit moralistic in refusing to have it off with married men behind their partners backs. Not my scene ever. As to the term 'liberal' that covers a multitude of sins from Randian idiocy to God knows what. In Australia the "Liberal Party" is considered right wing although from a US perspective it would be thought of as tending towards socialism. But hey, anything with even a wiff of a welfare net or government medical schemes are feared as opening the door to communism in the US. WEIRD man.! Canadians though, from my experience, aren't nearly as politically narrow.
Yeah, last time I was "straight" was 1967. I used "straight" as a reference to my life long lust of women. Personally, I don't care about any else's sexuality as long as it is consensually practice and does not include children. Canadian Liberals are much closer to classical liberalism than the distortions used by some Americans to call everyone that doesnt' agree with their conservative mythological agenda as liberal. Hell even our conservatives are "progressive" and would be classified by most American conservatives as almost "commies". I am not familiar with the politics of Australia, so I can't comment. Cheers.
Canada and Australia have a lot more in common than the US and Australia. It's interesting that if I ever mistake a Canadian accent for a US accent Canadians usually are insulted. Fair enough! Agree with you about consent and children. As a young boy learning the pipe organ at a catholic cathedral I witnessed far too much of the later. Turned me off christianity for the remainder of my life. Luckily I managed to escape without being raped myself but it came close. Every year two weeks after easter priests from my cathedral and the High Angican (Episcopal in US & Canada) church nearby had a weekend away at the ocean where a number of them had holiday houses. I coped with the drugs and booze on the saturday night but when on sunday morning I was asked by our bishop ( now a cadinal and prominent in Rome itself) asked me to be the naked offering on an alter for a black mass I grabbed my things and ran like hell. That was that last time I had anything to do with the bastards. Put an end to my musical education but that I suspect was a small price to pay for escaping their clutches.
