Okay, so let’s look at South Korea.
They have a population density of 517 per square kilometer and a population of 51 million.
They’ve kept their death rate astronomically low.
Didn’t feel they set a terribly fair standard though which is why I didn’t cite them at first.

We can also consider that the death per million rate of the whole world is 105. We are way above average given that metric as well.

Check out the daily new cases chart for South Korea on Worldometer. I would copy the image of the chart but it don't work for me.

Because even one death is unacceptable.

If they are trying to ascertain whether or not a respondent approves of Trumps handling of Covid, then ask that question specifically and you will get a more accurate answer. Asking if x amount of deaths is acceptable is very confusing as to its meaning, and the results will therefore be completely useless because different people will be answering a different interpretation of what it means. There will be some people that see it as a question about approving or disapproving of Trumps handling of Covid, and others will see it as a matter of no death being acceptable. There are many people that would reflexively say that 1,10,100,1000,10,000 etc are all unacceptable, while at the same time recognizing that it was unavoidable.

A well designed poll question does not have ambiguity in its meaning. This was asked solely for inflammatory purposes rather than actually being probative. Knowing full well that Republicans are going to tend to approve of trumps handling of Covid which will make them say yes it is acceptable; they ask this question so that they can demonize Republicans for calling death acceptable.

Yes, I see they are experiencing a second wave of infections. Looks like it’s only recently begun so it remains to be seen how bad it will get.

Death is acceptable in war, insurrections, revolutions, riots, self-defense, and pandemics.

Did you read the CBS News article? That was the result of one of many questions they asked. You should give it a look.

I am not speaking to the totality of all the questions that they asked. I said that this one question is silly and misleading. The other questions on that poll do not impact whether or not this one was nonsensical. Even one silly question can generate bombastic headlines; hence you have this thread.

Then why not make the claim that the poll in its entirety should have asked one simple question.

    Do you support Donald Trump?

They asked and received answers to their question(s). Don’t know why you’re complaining that they didn’t ask a different one.

-Why would I say that the poll should have asked one simple question? I do not follow your logic. The number of questions has not one thing to do with whether or not the question being discussed has any probative value.

    -Yes I support Trump.

-Of course they asked and received answers to their questions. I dont know why you are stating the blatantly obvious.

If I ask your opinion on various aspects of life in the US and the results of which could shed let on whether the current administration is doing a good job, should I have just asked you if the current administration is doing a good job?

If your goal is to determine his job approval for handling Covid, then ask whether you approve of his handling of Covid. Asking an ambiguous question that sort of hints at it being a question about approval for his handling of Covid, but can actually be interpreted in multiple ways, does not give you an accurate result because different people are answering different questions in their mind. Any well designed poll is going to have well designed questions that have a clear meaning. A question that results in multiple interpretations of its meaning is not going to provide the answer that they are supposedly seeking.

The makers of that poll know this full well. Therefore, they asked that ambiguous question solely to create bombastic headlines where they can imply that Republicans are essentially saying "let them eat cake"when that wasnt their intent even slightly.

So you would say that a more realistic comparison would be between China and the US, right? China has nearly triple the population but has reported under 5,000 deaths. Now I'm going to say China has lied about this, so lets call it 50,000 deaths.
Which means the US is still doing a crap job.

Maybe we should make a comparison to India. India has over 3 times the population but has reported under 60,000 deaths.
Another illustration of how poorly the US has handled the virus.

Trump washed his hands of leading any type of cohesive effort to combat the disease early on. He didn't try to build a coalition of governors to make some type of coherent response. Trump failed miserably compared to other world leaders.

Any and all questions can be interpreted in multiple ways.

If they asked “Do you approve of the administrations handling of the pandemic?” someone could answer yes while still believing the death toll is unacceptable. Maybe they believe it is the fault of governors, doctors, or any number of entities.

If they sought opinions on death toll acceptability I don’t know what other question they should be expected to ask.

I get that you want to find issues with this poll, but this just isn’t one of them.

You don’t drop from thousands dying per day to less than a dozen by luck. It takes effort.

You have to be dedicated to that effort

I'm not sure I would absolutely trust the numbers coming from South Korea, but the numbers you are quoting, is not what I calculate. The US is running at 3.09%. Global is 3.44%

I haven’t seen anything that would give me reason to distrust South Korea’s numbers and the world I’m quoting come from WorldoMeters which again I haven’t seen any reason to distrust their reporting.

In a country of 300 million people you can find idiots that may not understand the meaning of "do you approve of the administrations handling of the pandemic" but beyond any shadow of a doubt, a whole lot more would misconstrue the meaning of "are the number of deaths acceptable".

The intent of a poll is to provide as much clarity as is possible. Such a question CLEARLY does not provide clarity. It provides a bombastic headline, which was the intent. If you dont understand this or disagree, that is fine. We have both had our say on the matter. There really isnt much else to discuss. I am comfortable in the notion that I have more than adequately made and explained my point. This is starting to feel unnecessarily redundant.
