personally, I think the entire process of electing a new speaker should be made public. as I type this the GP is holding private meetings attempting to decide on a nominee after all,, politicians are claim to be PUBLIC servants... we all can predict how the democrats will vote.. if the process were made public I think it would be Steve Scalise nominated for the new speaker since the process is private it, I think it will be Jim Jordan nominated. secretly most republicans like the Jim Jordans and Donald Trumps of the world .. Publicly, they ride the fence and attempt to be sane. if Jordan becomes speaker, he will condemn the terror of Hamas and condone the terror of Putin
No it really cannot, and should not be made public. The house and senate are a cluster bleep of different constituencies with different interests. Public input is akin to the Roman coliseum crowd's thumbs up or down as to the fate of the fighters. We must accept that popular vote brought them there to represent our interests in the confines of what is possible, not what the loudest voices demand.
I agree. There should be no public input at these meetings. But there should be political output How many times have we heard politicians say this ? the American people deserve to know what’s going on.
The arguments are likely to be about the blow back for shutting down the government vs the "thrill of the kill" when you find the beast is still alive and looking for you!
Honestly, I don't see how either of them can ultimately win the speakership. It took a minor miracle to get McCarthy in with all of the infighting. We may be stuck with a pro tempore until the next election.
Or if there is actually a moderate caucus within GOP they assert themselves. It’s past time the media focused on this question, does one exist?
I think it kind of exists. I think there are moderate republicans (in ideology), but they are too terrified of Trump to say anything about it out loud anymore.
I think you may have that backwards. Congressional Republicans publicly "kiss the ring" of Donald Trump, and only dare to voice their condemnations in private. Trump has endorsed Jordan. You are 100% correct about the consequences of Jim Jordan taking the gavel.
Curious if this makes Jordan pissed, like real pissed. Hope so. SS made a real bad decision, health-wise. Stress and lack of rest is the worst for one's immune system when you're on chemo.
It’s going to take a while. Five have publicly stated they won’t vote for Scalise. Ken Buck is agnostic (won’t support either). I believe Jeffries has the most support in the House at this point.
Scalise dropped out. He couldn't get the votes to actually get the speakership. Which means Jordan probably can't either. I think we'll end up with the pro tem for the rest of the session.
But what if some moderates team up with Dems? OTOH, any moderate Repub who does that is committing political suicide.
I think the Dems are going to hold the line here, refusing to vote for ANY GOP candidate. They would have supported McCarthy otherwise -- I'm not saying he's a moderate, but he's more moderate than anyone else the GOP is goign to push at this point. At best the Dems will see if they can get a small number of republicans to vote for one of their own candidates. There's just very little reason, strategically, for them to help the GOP out at this point and lots of reasons to let them keep squirming instead.
I think they should take the Jordan v. Scott vote to the floor today because they’d only need 211 votes. At last a speaker! Oh! Forgot a detail there are 209 R’s in the chamber today.
