Arizona Governor, Republican Jan Brewer decided to veto SB 1062, disappointing conservatives and neoconservatives in that state, as well as right-wingers in other red states hoping similar legislation will be passed.

Though the bill was intended to be used as a weapon against same sex couples, it’s broader implications worried the business community in Arizona. It was feared the “religious freedom” offered by the proposed law would be interpreted by some companies as the right to discriminate against anyone they chose, not just homosexuals. This would be a far reaching public relations nightmare, something the GOP lawmakers refused to consider in their haste to please their narrow-minded supporters.

Since several other states are trying to pass similar laws, it is apparent the determination of the right wing to control the actions, thoughts, and freedoms of average Americans will continue. This failure in Arizona will not be viewed as a defeat, but rather another minor obstacle to the ongoing efforts of the GOP and Tea-publicans to impose their conservative/neoconservative oppressive agenda on all Americans.
