Russia is no ideal country :) we Have, as in many other countries, there's crime, and accidents on the roads :D The difference between Russia and many other countries is a large spread of DVRs. They are in almost every car.

In 2015 year on Russia's roads in car accidents killed 23.1 thousand people. 15.8 people per 100,000 population. In the U.S., as I found the situation better. 14 per 100,000. But the difference is not that big a sacrifice.

The correct comparison of mortality rates should be calculated per hour of driving/riding, not per capita.

Americans have 3 times more cars per capita than Russians and spend significantly more time driving or riding in cars that the Russians do. With that in mind the accident mortality rate in Russia is incomparably worse than it is in the US or any other western country.

Why? There is no policy. And no revelation or fraud or for residents of Russia, nor for the people of other countries.

Therefore figures not absolute are given (on them the USA looks worse — on roads in a year more people, than in Russia perish. 35,200 people in 2015), but per 100,000 population.

But, as it was truly noticed above, in Russia there are less cars. However, in a forehead it is impossible to compare as in Russia, for example, it is much more, than to the USA go by buses. And they have accidents too, in them perish too.

    Hey, that was nice.

I heard all the dvr's are because of lack of insurance and a way to prove fault in court.

Yes, DVRs are very widespread in Russia. Stand almost on all cars. I remember how in the West were surprised to a huge number of videos of the Chelyabinsk meteorite :)

But until recently it was more likely the question of fashion. As the proof in court of a video from registrars began to be accepted only since spring of this year. Before they the proof weren't. Though in case of absolutely simple and impudent accusations could help not to bring the matter to court at all. So it partly too helped distribution of video recorders.

But all my acquaintances who bought video recorders did it just like that. Simple for having :) I also on birthday gifted one DVR to my friend just like that, without having thought up the best gift :D

I saw some chaotic driving when I got to visit Kiev (years ago, sadly I've never visited Russia, though I'd love to), with drivers not adhering to a sense of right of way and taking some creative routes to get around traffic. Given this and the prevalence of alcoholism, if Russia is much like Ukraine, I can understand how there are so many accidents. But yes, we have our share of bad drivers and stupidity on the road in America as well. People are idiots :D

In Russia in the last 5-10 years becomes for improvement of a situation on roads much. About 15 years ago, for example, nobody was fastened by seat belts. Today it is done by all. About 10 years ago many drivers strongly exceeding admissible speed. Now all large roads are covered with automatic cameras and general penalties (forfeit) strongly reduced the speed of drivers. It was difficult to cross the road on the crosswalk earlier, drivers ignored pedestrians. Now began to stop to you it is worth approaching transition. Have practically disappeared drunk driving — too very strongly punish for it.

Therefore it will turn out to such graphic. The red line — a death toll on roads in thousands of people (2015 as I noted above, 23.1 thousand — still noticeable drop). Green — the number of cars in millions of pieces (in 2015 was 56 millions).

Why does everyone in Russia have dashboard cameras? Is that a legal requirement?

I think it's just common practice for insurance purposes.

I have not seen actual numbers, but in the Army, circa 62-64, the word we got in Germany was that in Italy your likely to die in a car accident. We were told some very troubling things about Italy. For the insurance I had in Germany to be good, were I to drive in Italy, I needed a special policy.
