Reuters journalist killed and others wounded by shelling in southern Lebanon, agencies say

Reuters' journalist Issam Abdallah takes a selfie picture while working in Maras, Turkey, on February 11. Abdallah was killed in southern Lebanon on Friday, according to a statement from the news agency. Issam Abdallah/Reuters

Reuters videographer Issam Abdallah was killed near the Israeli border in southern Lebanon on Friday, according to a statement from the news agency.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that our videographer, Issam Abdallah, has been killed. Issam was part of a Reuters crew in southern Lebanon who was providing a live signal. We are urgently seeking more information, working with authorities in the region, and supporting Issam’s family and colleagues,” Reuters said.
What we know so far: CNN teams on the ground say a projectile that came from the Israeli side hit a group of journalists that included Abdallah. At around the same time, the Israel Defense Forces issued a statement saying it had fired artillery at Lebanese territory in response to an explosion at the security fence near Hanita, an Israeli community across the border from the Lebanese village where the gathering of journalists was shelled.

A Lebanese security source tells CNN that an Israeli Apache helicopter was seen over the site of the attack.

Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment.

At least six other journalists, including two more from Reuters, and others from news outlets Al Jazeera and Agence France-Presse, were wounded in the same shelling. Abdallah and the group of injured journalists were wearing press-labeled jackets when the attack occurred, videos show.

The Al Jazeera journalists injured were Carmen Joukhadar and Elie Barakhiya, and the other Reuters journalists were Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh. The AFP has not publicly named the two wounded journalists from its agency.

Hezbollah response: The media relations department for Hezbollah — the Lebanese militant group designated as a terrorist organization by the US — released a statement condemning the "targeting" of affected journalists and offering condolences to their news outlets and families.

"We pray to God for a speedy recovery for the injured. We demand that all media, humanitarian, and legal institutions to condemn the Zionist aggression on Lebanon and condemn the so-called free world's blind bias to the murderers, criminals, and aggressors,” it said.

Separately, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati also released a statement condemning the attack on the journalists.

What's happening in southern Lebanon: Fighters in Lebanon and Israeli forces have regularly exchanged fire in recent days at the border following the surprise Hamas attacks o

    POLITICS / OCTOBER 12, 2023
'Omar and Tlaib Are Condemned in the US for Saying What Prominent Israelis Are Saying'

'The White House is ripping Squad members for proposing de-escalation and diplomacy to stop the killing of Israelis and Palestinians.'

"Rarely in American history has a White House spokesperson so unceremoniously called out members of the president’s own party in the language that press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre employed Tuesday. Jean-Pierre was asked to comment on the statements by a handful of progressive Democratic US House members calling for a cease-fire and other urgent steps to end escalating violence that, since Saturday’s horrific assault by Hamas on Israeli communities, and the ensuing horrific Israeli bombing of population centers in Gaza, has left more than 2,200 Israelis and Palestinians dead. She did not hold back.

“We believe they’re wrong. We believe they’re repugnant and we believe they’re disgraceful,” Jean-Pierre said. “Our condemnation belongs squarely with terrorists who have brutally murdered, raped, kidnapped, hundreds, hundreds of Israelis. There can be no equivocation about that. There are not two sides here. There are not two sides.”

Though she did not specifically mention the names of Democratic US Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Cori Bush of Missouri, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and several other House members, there was no confusion about the targets of Jean-Pierre’s remarks.

So what sort of “repugnant” things have these House Democrats been saying in the days since Hamas gunmen massacred Israeli civilians at a music festival and kibbutzim, and since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that “we are at war” and promised that Israel’s military would strike targets in Gaza with a force “like never before”? What “disgraceful” statements have been made since Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant ordered a “complete siege” of Gaza—blocking access to electricity, food, water, and fuel for an enclave that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Wednesday described as “an open-air prison, with millions of people struggling to secure basic necessities”?

Hamas in rare English ‘press conference’ as it tries to counter global condemnation

Hamas used a rare pre-recorded English language press conference to claim it had given “clear instructions” to its fighters not to target civilians as it sought to counter waves of international condemnation.

Basim Naim, the terrorist group’s head of international relations, insisted its gunmen were “keen to avoid harming civilians” - in an apparent desperate and easily-disproved attempt at media management.

'Netanyahu slammed for sparking panic with very rare Shabbat address to the nation'

'It was the first time a prime minister has spoken to country on Jewish Day of Rest since 1994, but speech appeared mostly designed to boost morale, deflect criticism'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was criticized for sowing panic on Friday night when he suddenly announced late in the evening that he would make an imminent televised address to the nation.

The announcement was highly unusual as no Israeli premier has done so on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, since Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin announced the failed rescue attempt of kidnapped IDF soldier Nachshon Wachsman in 1994.'

"Opposition leader Yair Lapid slammed Netanyahu after the premier’s primetime address.

“It is not unacceptable for the prime minister of Israel to send an entire country into a whirlwind of panic while waiting for his statement on Friday night during a time of emergency and then not say anything new either about the families of the abductees, not about the northern front, not about evacuation,” Lapid tweeted.

“Such statements must not made by a prime minister unless he has new information to bring to his people and the country,” he added.

Netanyahu’s announcement was also flamed across social media with users calling it “hollow,” “stupid,” and “another example of this man’s disconnect [from the people]” and “an escape from responsibility.”

So it's a "do as I say, not what I do".

'U.S. officials privately warn Israel to show restraint in retaliating against Hamas'

'In meetings in Israel, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin conveyed to Israeli leaders that it’s important to observe international rules of warfare'.

Why is it that it took you a week Joe to finally verbalize this fact.
Palestinians are being killed and injured right now like fish in a barrel.
What kind of "humanitarian aid" can they expect from the US and Israel?
Free burials and a sliver of land in Gaza to be buried in?

'Pres. Biden: "Overwhelming majority of Palestinians had nothing to do with Hamas and the attacks"

    Acyn @Acyn
Biden: It's also a priority for me to urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza… We can't lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming majority of Palestinians had nothing to do with Hamas and the appalling attacks'

Nonsense. Every temple was built in Jerusalem save the mobile one that was transported there from just east of the red sea to Isreal and was used until the first temple was destroyed in the late 5th century BC by Babylon. The second temple also built in Jerusalem during the later days of the Reign of Cyrus. It was destroyed in 70AD by the Romans. There were Jews there during the crusades and before and after.

58% of Palestinians voted for Hamas so yeah they had something to do with it. And a lot of them were cheering for it. You lay down with dog you run the risk of getting up with fleas. Moral of story don't vote for rabid dogs when animal control comes you might get caught in the cross fire assuming the dogs don't eat you first.

And the SAME could be said for Israelis who recently voted for Netanyahu and his collation of the most right wing government in Israel's history.

Your article does not reflect well on the Biden administration, either. That said, there is no reason to expect that this would have been any different, under another administration. And of course, the central truth, is that Israel is the only one who could have actually done anything, about the situation.

    <Snip>
A senior official from an Arab country in the region said their country repeatedly raised concerns with US and Israeli officials that Palestinian anger was reaching a dangerous pitch. “But they never listened every time we warned them,” the official said.

A Middle Eastern diplomat in Washington, DC, also told CNN that their government had repeatedly warned the White House and US intelligence officials of a buildup of Hamas weapons and anger among Palestinians that was set to explode.

The arms that exist in Gaza is beyond the imagination of anybody’s thinking,” they warned, the diplomat said. “The arms that exist in the West Bank, via Hamas, are also becoming a real problem and Hamas control of the West Bank is a real issue.”

This in every meeting, every meeting in the last year and a half,” the diplomat added.

And in February, CIA Director Bill Burns told an audience at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service that he was “quite concerned about the prospects for even greater fragility and even greater violence between Israelis and Palestinians.”

Bibi outright denied the Egyptian's claims that they repeatedly notified Israel about a possible attack and were ignored.

    This:

The US intelligence community produced at least two assessments based in part on intelligence provided by Israel warning the Biden administration of an increased risk for Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the weeks ahead of Saturday’s seismic attack on southern Israel, according to sources familiar with the intelligence.

One update from September 28 warned, based on multiple streams of intelligence, that the terror group Hamas was poised to escalate rocket-attacks across the border. An October 5 wire from the CIA warned generally of the increasing possibility of violence by Hamas. Then, on October 6, the day before the attack, US officials circulated reporting from Israel indicating unusual activity by Hamas — indications that are now clear: an attack was imminent.
