last night, fireworks. why is the explosive waste of chemicals and loud sudden noise so popular? my guess is most of you missed the great fireworks in kabul, baghdad, and other global holiday locations, because loud bangs do not make me go "ahhh. beautiful colors." they make me want to dig a fox hole ,

but, today is ok. 100 outside already. the ol' lady making chili and potato salad, while i cook this red snapper on the grill. should be a nice day.

Enjoy your fourth sounds like a good meal.

Maybe try some ear plugs. Even though I enjoy fire works (never was at war) they still startle me. Get my dog all wigged out.

Ask anybody under 25 years of age what we celebrate on the fourth of July.

That kid will tell you that we celebrate fireworks on July fourth.

Fireworks are a horror show for domestic animals as well as all of nature's critters. As a child, I enjoyed fireworks. But now, as an adult who understands the damage, they make me sick. Only man could, for his own enjoyment, terrorize others.

The fireworks are beautiful. I could do with less noise. But, the world over, celebrates with fireworks and doing it once a year should not cause anyone undue discomfort. And there is no better reason than to celebrate the birth of this great nation.

I'm going down to the tavern to recite- "When in the course of human events..."

    up to -

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations envinces an object to reduce him to a design of absolute despotism, it is his right, it is his duty, to throw off such government and to provide new safe guards to his future security. "

I gotta try a new venue. Bar down the road went under a month ago, which is a shame because on Independence Day I could always get a pint of ale for a recitation. There is that biker bar by the bridge , I have not even ever been in there.

Wish me luck, this is going to be fun! :)

Not sure why. I kinda get where you're coming from- I have the same response to loud exhaust- harleys, muscle cars, glass packs, semis downshifting... but I've always enjoyed the boom of fireworks for some reason. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I wouldnt mind loud exhaust just a few days a year either.

You all just keep a hose on the house bib with the valve open and a spray nozzle all ready to go. It's awful dry outside to be throwing fire into the air and raining embers down to the ground.

Just in case your house catches.

Fortunately here in Southwest Florida it is pretty wet as we had a good rain last night. And it will probably rain again today.... Pretty much every single day from here until around early November.

I believe I read something one of the founding fathers wrote that this day is supposed to be celebrated with much gunpowder and flare or something to that effect.

I got some good Roman candles and bottle rockets and firecrackers so I don't feel completely unarmed but I'm not wasting a bunch of money on the giant mortors. It was almost 30 bucks for eight good Roman candles.

And of course around here there will be much gunfire, just hope the Bubba's aren't shooting straight up into the air.

For me it will be motorcycle riding with my friend riding his four wheeler, and barbecue and fireworks.

This is only the second time I have ridden my dirt bike since I broke my ankle. So there won't be any crazy wheelies or jumps or spinning and drifting the back tire around corners.... Just sane operation

They do drone shows now, with a couple hundred different computer numerical control drones flying paterns, stars, flags, and what not. No noise but for the whiny buzz saw whirling.

I've never been to one of them drone shows myself. Do you think take a shotgun? With all that action flying above me I think taking a shotgun might be prudent. Just in case...

It's been popular since the time of the Tang Dynasty. But it is fun to watch. Most US cities and towns in the US ban fireworks from personal residence with fire risks, injuries, and an occassional death.

Me, Texas brisket low and slow since yesterday afternoon, and today, my spouse and I are making melon fruit salad, cornbread, and Chinese coleslaw. Yesterday I bought a peach cobbler at my local grocery store and a half gallon of Blue Bell Vanilla Ice cream.

Last night, Addison, a city in the DFW area had its fireworks and 4th of July celebration with an all-female crew of an historic B25 as part of its celebration. There are fireworks, military air show, food, fun, festivities, and of course fireworks starting at 9:30 pm. Of all the fireworks in DFW area, this is the one to go to.

You can still buy the good consumer fireworks here. Firecrackers bottle rockets Ariel mortors Roman candles things like that.
.... What you have to have your driver's license photocopied and sign a release swearing that you're going to use them to scare birds away from agricultural facilities. Lol.

Oh, you can buy good consumer fireworks, but you cannot set off the fireworks inside city limits because of safety issues. In most Texas counties, unless there is a severe water draught, it is perfectly legal.

    Happy 4th of July!

Here are a couple of vintage items.

1976 Bicentennial Quarter. Some of these pieces are still in circulation

1876 Centennial silver medal. There was a Great Fair held in Philadelphia the summer of that year.

Sure - once a year, no problem. That's only once per year that dogs and cats are terrified and many get out of their homes/yards. I only needed to see one dead dog on the side of the road to decide once per year DID cause undue discomfort. But enjoy! And I'm glad to read that you still consider the US a great nation, even under Biden.

The bicentennial quarters are still quite common in circulation. As you may recall I work at a gas station / mechanic's garage.

I am always looking for interesting coins. I have quite a few wheat pennies and I have found a couple of Indian Head nickels and even a few Indian pennies.

And a handful of silver quarters and dimes.

Coins are very interesting way of telling the story of our great nation. Happy Independence Day to you

Those must be very pampered pets to have only heard a loud noise once per year. I see dead dogs, cats, deer and other animals along the side of the road just about every day. I am sure that loud noise had nothing to do with it.

Right now, we have a house full of company with a total of two dogs and five cats. I have not seen a single one of them being bothered by the sound of fireworks.

Presidents come and go and we survive.

Then you might like this one. Most collectors now regard this as the first U.S. coin.

    1792 Half Disme All.jpg

After the coinage Act of 1792 was passed in April, Thomas Jefferson, who had the cabinet level responsibility for the mint, withdrew 75 Spanish Milled Dollars from his account in Philadelphia in July. He took them to a Philadelphia saw maker and artisan, John Harper. There, Harper made 1,500 of these half disme coins (five cent pieces) and delivered them to Jefferson.

Everyone, who could, wanted to get out of Philadelphia in the summer. Jefferson rode in his carriage to his home in Virginia, Monticello. Along the way he paid out these coins has tips and gave some to children. This coin was in Thomas Jefferson's possession, and he probably handled it. Today there are about 300 survivors, but most of them are not this good.

Here is an example of a Pillar Type Spanish Milled Dollar.

    1761 Dol All.jpg

Jefferson probably had mostly this type, which had the Spanish king's portrait on it. These coins are known as "pieces of eight" since they are divided into 8 reales. The U.S. silver dollar, which was modeled after the Spanish 8 reales, is divided into 100 cents.
