Hispanic Republicans take center stage as Democrat gaffes continue

…A more recent example came on Wednesday, when Arizona Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego accused Tanya Contreras Wheeless, a Hispanic woman running for Congress in Arizona's Fourth District as a Republican, of not being authentically Latina because she took her husband's last name.

"In the years I have known of you in Arizona it wasn't until you ran for office that you added Contreras," tweetedGallego. "Glad you are proud Latina now hope it will stay after you lose. FYI... google Tanya Wheelers see how often Contreras comes up prior to her running."

Gallego then suggested Wheeless intentionally "hid" her Hispanic identity before running for office to avoid discrimination.

"If you were Latino in Arizona around 2010 people were telling us to go back to Mexico," he wrote. "You would hear I am not voting for a '****' ... We took the arrows for her."

"Tanya is Latina, cuando le conviene" (meaning "when it suits her"), Gallego added.

Wheeless responded in a statement, lamenting how common such attacks have become and describing them as "sexist and racist." She also noted "many women change their name when they get married, but that doesn't change who they are or where they came from."

Beyond Wheeless, other Latina candidates are making headlines for speaking out and being Republican.

Two — Monica De La Cruz and Cassy Garcia — are, like Flores, in districts along the southern border. The other, Yesli Vega, is the Republican nominee in Virginia's Seventh District.

A sign of their success is the number of attacks they've received from Democrats and journalists from mainstream outlets. CNN, for example, published an op-ed by an attorney and a member of the USA Today board of contributors saying the conservative Hispanic women running for Congress were "not the 'real deal.'" The New York Times, meanwhile, ran a storyreferring to the "rise of the far-right Latina."…

This is an interesting news article about the issues between the two parties and the Hispanic voters. The documented attack on a Hispanic GOP Woman for taking her husbands name when she got married is of particular interest. Yet another mistake by the democrats.

 

The transition of a large percentage of Hispanic voters to the GOP continues and the Dems didn’t see it coming and are ill prepared to deal with it.

 

They called them Breakfast Tacos. That should fix it.

 

I don’t blame her for suddenly playing up her Hispanic background, and I don’t blame her opponent for pointing it out.

 

Questioning the motives of a Latina woman who takes her husbands last name in marriage is a sure winner too….

 

Gallego WON last time with over 75% of the vote...

I'd vote for a breakfast taco over anything the Democrats have going. With some sauce on the side.

 

Because it’s so unnatural for a woman to take her husbands name as her married name. She never denied her being Hispanic. Have you heard of Rachel Campos Duffy? She married a man who became a congressman and now she’s a host of Fox and Friends Weekend and he’s a contributor on Fox. Targeting a Hispanic woman for marrying a man she loves is pathetic.

 

And now fears running against another Hispanic American so he attacks her marriage and her family. Simply pathetic!

 

So why’s she suddenly using Contreras if it’s so normal to take his name?
Stop pretending l you don’t understand the argument.

 

Sort of like Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez? Her married name was Brixey but dropped that to run for the House.

Her statement came in response to a Twitter exchange between Gallego and the candidate where the former questioned Wheeless' current motivation for using her maiden name Contreras, which is of Hispanic origin.

The commotion started with a tweet hashtagged #TacoTuesday. Wheeless tweeted: "I am not a taco, but I am a proud, conservative Latina who looks forward to flipping #AZ04 in November!" …


…In response to the tweets, Wheeless said in a written statement that Gallego's assertion that she was "not sufficiently Latina" was disappointing but not surprising.

"Many women change their last name when they get married, but that doesn’t change who they are or where they came from," Wheeless said. "Attacking me for using my married name is sexist and racist."

Wheeless said she was proud of her heritage.

"I will use my name when and how I want," she added. "I am proud to be part Mexican, part Canadian and 100% American, and I'll never stop fighting for the American dream."

Gallego's campaign declined to comment.

Wheeless and Gallego are not running in the same district. Wheeless faces four primary opponents in the GOP primary Aug. 2 to secure the party's nomination for the new 4th Congressional District, which includes portions of Mesa, Tempe and Chandler. The winner will take on incumbent Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., in the November general election.

Interesting. They are not running for the same district. This Hispanic democrat is attacking the character of a Hispanic Republican woman who would run against a white incumbent democrat.

 

But that’s different! There’s a D after the name in that case. That makes it ok

He did and ironically she’s not going to be his general election opponent since she’s running in the 4th district. Should she win the nomination she will be challenging a white democrat incumbent

 

He’s not running against her. He attacked a married Latina running in a different district.
