How America Can Experience a 'New Birth of Freedom'

As our latest exercise in democracy continues to unfold, a relevant Wall Street Journal article caught my eye today. In “Lincoln’s Vision of Democracy,” famed Princeton historian Allen C. Guelzo shows how Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” summarized American democracy concisely but brilliantly in his now-famous triplet: “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

As Dr. Guelzo explains, “This wasn’t merely a rhetorical flourish. In that triplet, Lincoln lays out the three fundamental elements of democracy.” The first is consent—government of the people. The second is the people’s voice in the work of governing—government by the people. The third is government that serves the interests of the people it represents—government for the people.

President Lincoln believed that a new commitment to these three ideals would lead to a “new birth of freedom” for our land. According to Dr. Guelzo, “That new birth is the task that lies before every succeeding generation of Americans. In it, we find our way not only back to Lincoln but to democracy itself.”

How can we experience this “new birth of freedom” in these divided and divisive days?

America is in an era of darkness. We can renew our freedom. We can restore our republic from those who have stolen it from us.

 

The only currently active part of Lincoln's statement is "government of the people". At this time, it is not by nor for the people. The people are too intellectually lazy to exercise what is necessary for the last two parts to take hold.

 

Just as the institution of slavery in the United States of America cast a long shadow, so has the mindset of the founders of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Our present society and our lives as a people bear witness to both.

This marks one of few times in U.S. history where the party in power is doing a lousy job is given a vote of confidence by the people. It’s like having Herbert Hoover win the 1932 presidential election over Franklin Roosevelt. Why has this happened?

1. The American people are addicted to receiving checks from the government. They received them during Coved, and now it’s expected.

2. The education system has indoctrinated the young to vote Democrat. It’s now become a moral responsibility for them because they have been taught this this country’s history and values are racist and economically unfair. The only cure is socialism and the faster socialism can be imposed on the American public, the faster the wrongs of the past can be corrected.

Is there any way to correct this? Not for many years, if ever. If the Democrats take the Senate, which is likely, and they retain control of the House, which seems more and more likely, the Biden puppet and the radical left will run wild. They will nationalize the election system with Senate and House bill #1, and take firm control of the political system. “The end of Democracy,” which they claimed was going to happen if the Republicans won, will become a reality.

lincoln, an old country lawyer who represented railroad corporations as they acquired right of way from farmers, would agree with me that a strong central national government is the best guarantor of freedom.

 

So you are equating the founding fathers of this country with slavery. That is truly sad and completely inaccurate.

Yes, slavery existed in this country until 1865. It is a stain on our history, but there were people opposed it from the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To say this country’s entire history can be summed up by Critical Race Theory is ridiculous.

4. that we really like social security and medicare as they are

5. we want to stand with our allies against enemies like the ibn saud and the russians, and are willing to pay a little more for gas to do so

6. armed mobs of "proud boys" taking orders from the dear leader of your party are seen as no way to insure domestic tranquility.

7. we do not believe that our teachers are "grooming" children and we do not want our children indoctrinated with myths of your choosing

8. medical decisions are between a woman and her doctor. "local politicians" need to ****.

9. most of us take health advice from medical specialists, not some fool on twitter.

so maybe, just maybe we can pull back from the authoritarian brink that trump has driven us to and really make a better america.

 

many of our founders enjoyed a good life of leisure at the expense of slaves. they had slaves for sex and fathered slave children. some did not, but the "peculiar institution" was widely accepted

i'm not sure either of us understand "critical race theory" but i don't think anyone says that "the country's entire history can be summed up by crt."

A good example is a few young people who were at my register last night buying snacks. There were three of them. One of them was paying for all of the purchases and I asked if it was all together....

And the one girl said yes because the boy was broke... He didn't have any money of his own she said... So then how does she pay for it? With a food stamp card of course.

She actually acted like she had some money of her own. I held my tongue. But I really wanted to take all of the snacks and say these belong to me because I actually work and pay the taxes that give you the "free" money that you think is yours.

Such a sense of entitlement. Like the thought never occurred to her that it actually wasn't her money.

These are the people that will grow up voting Democrat.

in florida many people should have "disaster" food stamp due to the recent hurricane.

 

I go to work and make enough that I don't need to ask for welfare.

Personally I don't believe that you should be able to buy junk food with it. It should be whole foods only.

That way the taxpayer doesn't have to foot the bill from the ill health that comes from a steady diet of junk food.

 

i don't disagree about the junk food, but in cases like the homeless and people destroyed by hurricane even rice and beans may be difficult to prepare.

America, right now, is AGAIN showing that is the "Shinning Light on the hilltop". We have the Greatest Nation on earth and even in these hard times we ARE succeeding where our competitors are worried how they will go on. The dark days of tRaitor tRump are behind us and, as his election denier's lost their bid to control elections we can look forward to a fair and equatable election in 2024. We may not have a loud flashy "daily drama" administration anymore. But, we do have and an administration the it is slowly, steadily, sanely moving forward day by day. Restoring the faith and confidence of our allies, making small gains for everyday AmeriCAN's and doing it with calm dignity.

These are BRIGHT times for OUR Nation, and after these mid-terms, we once again have a BRIGHT future to look forward too.

 

A strong central government is the source of the abuse of our rights, freedom, and liberty.
