They don't really though. Most of the present antivaxers have no problem with taking just about all of them many vaccines we all take routinely. The problem they have with the COVID vaccines is that TRUMP was just slightly against them 2 years ago. (and has since changed his mind)

This level of unquestioning worship by ANY American of ANY other American is truly astonishing. We are a nation that generally despises lickspittles and fawning toadies but the Trump phenomena seems a remarkable exception.

That's a myth caused by the relatively very high levels of infant mortality. When a substantial % your people die before they are 5 it skews your figures in the direction of a lower overall life expectancy that is numerically much below what it actually appears. Look at the relative commonalty of old people in literature and records of the time and it seems much the same as now. There were more children dying and fewer people over 70 but otherwise if you lived past 5 you would generally get the Biblical "3 score and 10 " with hopefully a few years more. The idea that everyone just keeled over at 45 does not seem the actual case.

Drugs in the 19th and very early 20th centuries were widely prescribed and even more widely taken. Laudanum, a combination of alcohol and opium, was almost the aspirin of the day. AFAIK there are no statistics indicating that lots of people were dying from drug abuse back then. Drug addiction was, admittedly, very common and regarded as an ongoing scourge but the idea that it was this automatically fatal and terribly contagious malady seems as absent then as it remains prevalent now.

    Wow. No.

Hey everyone. How many lives have you seen COVID infection destroy? How many have you seen destroyed by illicit drugs? End of discussion.

I agree with both drug legalization and vaccine mandates (though I prefer soft mandates like requiring it to work with the public). I don't think they're comparable. A better comparison would be vaccine mandates and illegal drunk driving. Then the rationale would be the same. Both going unvaccinated in public and driving drunk in public put others' lives at risk. For drug legalization, people often fail to realize that actually few illegal drugs are even as dangerous as alcohol... pcp could be an exception. Alcohol is not harmless by any means, but prohibition didn't make things better. Drug use does not inherently harm others. Irresponsible use is what should be outlawed, such as intoxicated driving. There are people who can use these substances without causing problems for others. But when we make them illegal, we make it harder to address problems that arise and create new problems such as funding organized crime.

As someone who has used damn near every drug under the Sun at some point in my life I must disagree with you.

Very few people moderately use methamphetamines or cocaine.... Especially crack.

The family and loved one of a drug addict stuffers.. especially the children.

    Many people moderately use alcohol.

No I'm not saying it doesn't have a social cost and it can't be people's Huckleberry either.

Well my experiences are pretty different. I haven't tried anything that was illegal except marijuana. But half the fraternity I was in used cocaine sometimes without problems. Alcohol was a different story. Though the advice was to never try it because I'd then want it. I declined on the few occasions it was offered to me. A large proportion of my friends growing up used marijuana daily to weekly, and I tried it a few times, but didn't really like it. None of them seemed to have major problems with it. One was pretty involved in the NORML campaign. A girl I dated who was later one of my good friends in high school, her and our friend used meth like once a month. Lost touch with her, but she seemed okay last I saw her.

In the hospital I've seen all kinds of people with drug problems of all kinds, but it was usually alcohol (liver failure, liver cancer, car accident, brawl) or tobacco related (lung cancer), though to be fair they're more popular.

Moving away from anecdotes, approximately 40 million Americans have at least tried cocaine. Approximately 5 million have used cocaine in the last year, per statista. A quick attempt to find cocaine-related arrests for some reason groups it with heroin and is about 250k arrests per year, so at most that's 1 in 20 past year users having a past year problem with the law. And usually that's incidental possession when being arrested for another offense. So yeah, still seems like the law is arbitrary on drug use.

I work nights in a gas station and I see some of the most strangest strung out people who are homeless largely because of their meth habit.

They come in babbling about absolutely nothing.
