Is anyone on this forum actually trained to debate/taken a debate course in high school or college? I doubt it given the rhetoric and inability to stay on topic, but it's worth asking.

It's off-topic but relevant at the same time (quite the oxymoron).

Who cares? You're not special because you're a school teacher, actually its a pretty normal/average job so no need to be full of yourself

What does my profession have to do with the original post? That's right...nothing at all. Thanks for proving in the second post on the thread that many on this board can't stay on topic.

The point is you think you're better than others because you've debated in a formal situation before. See, the real collegiates don't waste their time debating, they take classes in economics/physics/math-related subjects. Time is money as they say, and the fact you're proud you wasted your time "debating" is pathetic

edit: And no it's not ironic because I acknowledge this forum is for fun...it's just for kicks get over yourself

    - - - Updated - - -

What I'm saying is what you do (formal debates) seriously others do for fun on their down-time when they're not actually accomplishing things

I eagerly await your pompous reply

Also, should I purposely misspell something so you can get a high out of correcting me?

I've been on a debate team. I fail to see the point of someone injecting standard formal debate rules when the only rules of the forum are forum rules.

I have a degree in business management and manage my own rental properties as a second job...how does the fact that I've taken the time to educate myself on the basics of debate (not through a class or a team, actually) make me think I'm "better than anyone else?"

Seems to me like you're awfully defensive; not feeling adequate today, eh?

You don't see the point in asking people to address what their "opponent" stated instead of assigning a false position to them? You don't see the point in asking people to provide warrants for their claims that have reputable sources?

I don't need to know your credentials, no need to feel defensive you should take a deep look at yourself in the mirror while uttering your last statement to yourself.

lastly, "how many on this forum actually been on a debate team?" Why did you have to put "actually" in there? As if they don't understand what debating is, and you do, because you've "actually" been on a debate team?

I haven't "actually" been on a debate team, woe is life!!!

LOL start a troll thread and you'd better expect to be trolled.

My guess would be no one, including me, has been on one. I would agree that some degree of trying to use logic, stay on topic, have premises and conclusions would help the threads around here. PF is the home of strawman arguments and outright delusions that are easily contradicted by facts. I do actually find it quite informative though, because you know the idiots on here who can't maintain a logical train of thought are representative of so many more in this country, and they vote.

This board is a "debating" board; people don't come here for other reasons.

Why did you put "actually" in the thread title?

    It seems kind of snotty

If you want to make those the rules of the forum then I suggest you talk to moderators. Everyone is guilty of doing that to some degree. The fact that ideas are more difficult to convey online makes it more difficult for the opposition to understand.

    Define Reputable Source?

That's actually a fair point. I hadn't considered using this board as a representative cross-sample of the Amiercan electorate. so sad

What kind of a debate-related comment is that? What are you sad about? Are you really sad, or just saying the typical "so sad that people are so stupid" comment?

Because we come to this board to debate? It's like playing a game of pick-up basketball and asking who "actually' played competitive basketball in their youth.

I still would like to know how the OP defines a 'Reputable Source?'

Why else would you come to a "political opinions" message board?

Not Wikipedia. Would you like me to Private Message you the handout I give my students on what reputable sources are and are not?

Lastly, students, make sure you spell everything correctly and use proper grammar. Even if you just want to casually debate on an internet forum, because I (Dave) will call you out on it!

To just post, discuss and maybe share my ideas. And from time to time, I may challenge the way someone thinks. If someone disagrees, that's fine. If it leads to an debate, that's fine too. I don't go around message boards pointing out inaccuracies or fallacies when I find them. I don't seek debates because generally it often leads no where and even if one side it argues best for his or her side the opinions and views of the opposition often remain unchanged.
