Except it's the right that hates the American government, not the left. From the source of the post you quoted: "These feelings are especially pronounced among Republicans: 35 percent of Republicans now view the government as more of an enemy; 21 percent view it as a friend. Twenty years ago these numbers were basically reversed. There's been a similar though less dramatic shift among independents. Democrats, on the other hand, have become friendlier toward the federal government over the same period."

As usual, I'd say it's largely Fox News fault - turning republicans against our government. Though they were already somewhat predisposed to it, being anti-government at baseline.

I'm not very concerned that Russia or China want to invade the US anytime soon, but they do want more power, resources, and influence, as most countries with any hope of gaining those things do.

Why do you people invariably harp on "invasion"? You think an invasion of the United States is the only possible threat to us?

I have not. Because our land is not threatened. I would have advocated we go to war against Japan but I was only two-years-old on Dec 7, 1941.

It's not even a realistic threat, actually. It was a distant dream even at the height of Hitler's power. I really don't think there's a threat at all, other than if somebody tries to use strategic nukes. If threat means decreased influence and power, I guess that's real, but just kind of how history goes.

You asked us to sell Americans on another war. Not selling or justifying attacks on the United States. As such, the Japanese perspective is inconsequential on "selling Americans on a war". If Americans feel threatened, they will war.

I get the perspective too. The British went all over the world being imperial, why shouldn't the Japanese (who considered themselves to be the best) be imperial too? And America was actively blocking their efforts to be an imperial power, while America was seen as having no business interfering with the Pacific and Asia, which ought to be in the Japanese sphere of influence.

Imperialism was really the problem. Other than that, the issue with Pearl Harbor is they completely misunderstood their enemy, and the admiral who designed the attack, and had spent time in America, could have told them that had they listened to him. But that whole backstabbing snake in the grass narrative sold to galvanize people to war with the Japanese. That was mostly bullshit.

Why does our land have to be threatened for you to advocate a war?

For one thing you're asking other people to literally give up their life.

Tell it to the thousands who are killed and/or wounded.

Nor do graves. It's always easy to fight wars from a La-z-Boy in a safe and secure home while playing Battlefield 1942 on a PC and looking at statistics.

I've never played any war games. My only "experience" with war comes from the accounts of my family members.

Perhaps those that wish to send others unnecessarily into harms way should set an example by placing themselves in the same position.

Bugger off. I'm too old to be a soldier of any kind. And why do you label it "unnecessary"?
