I don’t hate a racist they were brought up that way. To hate them is exactly the same of them hating you. It is what ones learns that is all. That being said I do hate racism completely but it’s our history. I go through life trying to be better and what should that include? I practice the ability of acceptance because you can’t expect someone to accept you when you outright dismiss them for being who they are. So in my life as a black man and in my profession working on houses I don’t take racism to heart. All I can do is be exceptional. I’ve gotten the omg I didn’t expect this level of work from you my house looks amazing here’s a 100$ tip. And why did that happen because my my life’s mission statement to help the cause is to not show my butt in the face of disrespect but to show my excellence. To show that not all black peoples are drug dealers etc.... it worked quite a few times. Do you think that is a way forward one man or woman at a time or not? I don’t know if I’m making this quote or it’s someone else’s. I don’t fear the ideals of men I only fear the men with the ideals of one man. I live by that thus I fear myself so I acknowledge, respect, and understand the ideals of the many.

I like your comments, and I think you hit on some very important points.
First, I admire your notion of hate--that if someone hates you and you hate them back because of it, then you become the thing you hate.

Back in my college days, I belonged to a group called, "Building Bridges." Our purpose was to engage others in discussions about topics (mostly race). It was an eye-opener to say the least. Many of the discussions left me feeling like I needed to apologize to the Blacks in the group because of the "racist" tinge of so many of the Whites who took part. I knew some of them, and even if I didn't know them personally, I knew them culturally. They were not overtly racist people. But so much of the discussion formed around cultural differences and were anchored to the "us and them" mentality that their comments sounded quite prejudiced. Pointing that out to them made them very defensive and often angry.

Simply put, most Whites in that time and place had little interaction with other races, and formed their impressions, biases, and opinions from stereotypes. There was one Black student in my H.S. graduating class. He more or less had to play the role of the token Black and adapt to the expectations others had for his behavior (usually something similar to Sunshine Sammy from "Little Rascals). Other students liked him and most treated him with a kind of respect that was polite while at the same time underscoring the fact that he was different. It really came down to the fact that none of us knew how to relate to him as an equal.

You touched on one of the stereotypes that so many Whites have of Blacks when you mentioned drug dealers. I taught for years in schools that were at least 50% Black and Hispanic. I don't pretend to be racially blind (nor do I think that's appropriate), but I've had some pretty frank discussions with kids about racial/cultural issues. One thing that seemed to keep coming up was the idea of fulfilling those stereotypes other have of us.

I knew kids who were making way more money than me selling drugs, and we discussed that. I didn't cluck my tongue at them, didn't threaten to turn them in or call parents, I just asked them to talk about what they were doing. I asked if they thought about how they were fitting in to the stereotypes other have of them. My thought was like yours--that we have to work against the stereotypes. (And for those who might be upset by me not calling the cops, I tried taking it to the school administrators, but was essentially told that I was seeing things. The school did not want to have a negative label.)

Anyway, my feeling is that using the word, race, triggers a lot of negative emotion and tends to shut down much needed discussion. We should be addressing the stereotypes and working to better understand how simple biases can snowball into something like racism. We are not one people in a racial or cultural sense. Never have been. And that's a good thing.

I enjoyed that. Blacks have been called lazy since being slaves it makes no sense. White people are the root of all evil makes no sense.
Brown people are the root of all evil to a racist. Most of the demonizing comes from others peoples stories not first hand accounts. How is black lives matter a terrorist group and have yet to harm anyone? Because of a story. Why was acorn destroyed? Because of story. So why do brown Americans feel racism in every insult? Because of the narrative created by real racist who actually act on it is repeated by ignorant followers. They think it’s funny to to say things like you are Dan aren’t you. We need to quiet the loudest most powerful people by not giving them something to shout about. We need to own our stories. Example being Obama a true family man, a decent man. He was the anti-Christ, hitter, etc and disrespected at every turn for being black. He held his head up high and stayed a good man even though you know it hurt him. Thats a proper story. And also the nicest and bravest person I ever met was a white woman that is also the right story to tell.

    Absolutely agree.

Stereotypes are a natural way of understanding the world around us. Brains need a way to sort out information and categorize it in terms of importance, danger, and so forth. We can't help that, nor should we.

However, we can and should be consciously aware of how we're using our stereotypes. If we pay attention to how media use our tendency towards stereotypes, we can see that it's purposeful and effective. Our way of seeing the world is purposefully manipulated in order to attract our attention and get us to respond in certain ways.

A quick look on these boards shows us that politics has become quite polar, and that we tend to see each other through those stereotypes dangled in front of us by the media. Politicians use those stereotypes to get votes, media uses them to get clicks. I often read the comments posted after certain news and opinion articles, and it's immediately obvious how effective all this manipulation is.

As far as stereotypes applied to other cultures, there is a certain fear of outsiders deep in the human psyche. Playing on that fear can unite one group of people against another, erasing any kind of logical reasoning we might hope to have. It's that polarity, that tendency to see things in us/them terms that destroys us in the end--victims of our own lack of awareness.

Yes, we all need to quiet the loudest and most powerful who become the stereotypes that represent us to the world. How to do that is the real challenge.

Racism is learned behaviour. Be it from their parents, environment and/or friend circle(s).

Racism is easy to get into, especially if it manifests itself at a young age. Can and will take many years to "deprogram" someone, but it's 100% possible.

One of the members of our Building Bridges group was a young Black man who said he grew up hating Whites. Never said that he changed his mind about it, but he told me that he'd rather deal with a redneck klansman than a White liberal because the redneck was 100% genuine.

I'm not convinced that people who've lived lives ordered by racism and stereotypes can simply "deprogram." The human "algorithms" that form the base of our thinking rely on experience and/or the lack of it. It's unconscious and learned behavior that can never be completely erased.

But anyway, we do have to challenge those stereotypes. One of the biggest problems today is in how media/social media play such an active role in reinforcing our prejudices.

Is anyone self-deceptive or sheltered enough to think racism doesn't exist?

Of course there are those who believe in Bigfoot and racism. Bigfoot is more believable.

Yeah, that's adorable. Meanwhile, here in reality, racism is a thing. I'm glad if you are sheltered enough that you've never encountered it. I wish others were that lucky.

Nah, racism is a thing today to serve political purposes. Real racism hasn’t existed for decades.

Visit my hometown some time if you are curious about the truth. But if the fantasy is comfortable enough, by all means.

If my family is any indication, most whites don't think about other races. They live in white communities and never talk about other races. They don't care. They are much more interested in the Green Bay Packers, beer, ice fishing, snowmobiling, bowhunting, white water rafting, that hot chic that moved in down the street and their next trip to the Bahamas.

Whites that are obsessed with politics (like me) think about race issues much more. We are a small minority though and are not the rule. I never thought about other races until I got into politics and moved into a multi-racial neighborhood.

It exists in NJ for sure
Try walking in the following towns while white:
    Camden
    Irvington
    East Orange
If you live to tell about it,let us know

The least racist group is white people. Most of us don't give a crap about any ones color

As I said in abother race thread, stick a black man in an all white town and by the end of the day he will be at happy hour with his new white friends
Stick a white man in an all black town and by the end of the day he will be in the ER

This is why non whites now have to fabricate stories of racism, because there aren't enough white racists anymore to warrant giving minorities special treatment

Racism is immoral. You chose the high road. Leading by example. All my admiration to you.

I think your way is the way to go for individuals.

But racism is an institutional disease. It must be killed at an institutional level. Not by confronting racism with prejudice, or violence. But through support for all those who try to eliminate the problem at its roots. Organizations that oppose racism are not meant to confront racists with violence. But to fix the institutionalized problem. Racists aren't just brought up that way. They are the product of those institutions.

I have a black lady living next to me. I have been in her house and she has been in mine. We don't socialize but that's the way the cookie crumbles. She keeps her home looking nice as I do. I see her going to work every day. We get along nicely. But I would never marry her because of her race. Does that make me a racist? I only wish both of our homes would be an example for the rest of the neighborhood as well as both races.

Yes we get it. Nothing enrages the left more than seeing a white community that is prospering and happy. There must be some social conflict introduced at the point of a government gun. That freedom of association clause in the Constitution is only advisory after all.

It would depend on the minority I suppose. If the minority had the same worldview as the white community, if they viewed themselves the same as whites, were friendly to whites, followed the rules the same as whites, enjoyed the same hobbies, nothing much would happen. If they on the other hand were radical leftists who ran to social media over every perceived slight, were hostile, if their children were violent, etc.... the white flight would begin.

It doesn't matter who the minority is though, white flight in the upper middle class goes into effect at the 25% mark (this applies to Latino, black or Asian) and it applies equally to liberal or conservative whites. The majority of whites of economic means prefer to live in all white or majority white communities. Here in Wisconsin, there are tons of all white communities. I happen to live in one of the few diverse communities.

I have now lived in a diverse community for five years and several all white communities previously and I prefer all white communities. That being said, some of my son's closest friends are black/Muslim(Asian)/Latino/Indigenous and he is dating a black girl. I am pretty sure that he and my daughter will prefer to live in a diverse community over an all white community. I really don't care, that is their business. I believe there should be communities that accommodate all of the middle class; diverse, majority black, majority white, majority Asian or majority Latino. Screw the left's social engineering, it does nothing but engender social strife. Quit forcing people together and let them decide for themselves.

"Minorities" believe the poppycock. If someone constantly told me I was a victim of society of course I could blame all my failures on that.

Racism in the US was perpetuated by slave owning democrats long ago. They needed a way to justify such an atrocity and claiming blacks were not really considered human was a way of doing that.

Then democrats used slaves to increase their voting power in order to keep power in government. When democrats tried to expand slavery westward the crap hit the fan. Well the democrats lost.

Same as today we know democrats do not like losing so the dems came up with the Jim Crow stuff and it was allowed to satisfy the losing dems.

Fast forward to today and dems are still using race and the black vote to gain political power. Except today the dems are using the racism they created to demonize their opponents.

    There you have it.

Your failure to face the truth can be seen in your response. Keep your head in the sand while the world pass you by.

What social engineering, if a house goes on sale and the person that can afford such should be able to freely buy it. Are you saying discrimination should be allowed and only whites should be able to live in white communities??
