I am not sure if we can say that there would not be any overpowering government. Who knows the type of people that would some how survive, left wing; right wing; those who think that a dictatorships work best. I think that it would take a whole lot longer than you anticipated to get a country back up and running.

I do not believe folk would quietly accept a return to today's big government. The folk who like it the most would all be extinct while the folk who hate it would be most of the survivors. I am not claiming we would see a new national government and I'm not sure that is bad. Look at what that government is doing to us now.

Once again I really do not think that some type event is going to pick and choose who to take out and who gets to survive. Lets just say for example a meteor comes in and hits earth; it kicks up dust that last for months even years and it take out a few states with on the south west part of America. Lets say these states were Arizona, Texas, and maybe a few others. That area of the United States is more inclined to be a confederate rather than those in the NY, NJ, PA area. Thats a very naive comment to say that the "folk who like it the most would all be extinct". You have no control over these disaster. And lets say that it is not a natural disaster and it happens to be a nuke or something else. The first place to go would be NYC, LA, parts of Texas, Washington DC, this is due to it's large population and where the country operates from. We also need to take into account for the mass bunkers that are maintained by the government for the government officials, they also control the military. So trying to say that it just so happens the the majority of people to survive are those who do not want big government and want the old confederacy back it statistically extremely unlikely.
