I'm worried about this Windows 10 stuff and the switch back to the Desktop. I like my Windows 8 Start Screen. And I especially like my full-screen Internet Explorer. When Microsoft tried to move me back to the desktop with Windows 8.1 update, I went on the internet to learn how to change it back. I LOVE this metro browser!
I hate the Windows 8 setup. It was designed for tablets and thus is extremely inefficient when using a mouse. With previous versions of windows I could just scroll through the list and click on the program I wanted with minimal mouse movement. Or I could just type in the first few letters of the program I wanted in the search box and instantly get the exe that I want. With windows 8 I have to get into the obnoxious "map" screen and then click all over the freaking screen to get to a program. I should specify that I am using the Windows 8 at school so I don't know if its 8 or 8.1 but I do not that it is less efficient to use than Windows 7. This is obviously just for programs that are not linked with shortcuts on the desktop itself. I also hate the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing color palette. It looks like a drunk clown with psoriasis who swallowed a box of crayons puked all over my computer screen.
Windows 8 is awful. I don't feel I really need to explain why, as that horse has been beaten to death all over the internet. However, almost miraculously, there is still a minority who prefer it over a sane operating system. The Metro/Start Screen interface and related apps aren't being taken away in Windows 10, they're just rightfully putting more focus back on the desktop. If you prefer Metro, you'll still be able to use it.
Windows 8 is more for touch screen users and tablets. The majority of people do not have this (yet), so the interface was understandably frustrating with a mouse.
I don't know why so many people hate Windows 8. I like it and I don't have a touch screen. I especially like the Internet Explorer on the start screen. Not the one on the desktop. There's a difference. There's also a Read view that I use on slow-loading news sites to get nothing but a clean formatted article.
I think Windows 10 is going to be a big hit personally. Imagine a phablet with a bluetooth keyboard and a mouse? I don't think iOS or Android support mouses at all. And this should make it possible to play many windows games on windows 10 phones and tablets. The selling point is how the UI is designed for easy transitions between desktop mode and touch screen mode, so people who want to stick with the tiles can presumably do that.
Ah my bad... still, mouse support is well engrained into windows apps. I still think it is going to increase Microsoft's market share and be popular with phablets.
