Many countries in eastern europe have declining populations because of all the unemployment. Many people feel they simply cannot afford to have children. http://www.setimes.com/cocoon/setimes/xhtml/en_GB/features/setimes/features/2011/11/24/feature-02 Population decline is especially apparent in Romania. So why is it all these other ethnicities are having so many babies? How are they different from eastern europeans? I have no doubt there is a correlation between poverty and high fertility, but I think it is high fertility that is the cause of poverty, not the other way around! http://www.africanews.com/site/Malawi_High_fertility_rate_fuelling_poverty/list_messages/41471
I believe that this is another manifestation of selfishness. I recall watching a PBS documentary filmed in India many years ago and the producer asked a father why he had so many children. His response was that having more children provided a statistical advantage for him (i.e. the probability was higher that one of the kids would become successful and provide for him in his old age). This is a disease. We are the equivalent of bacteria on a kitchen sink. Populate until the available resources limit us.
