Some 20,000 refugees of Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans fill the floor of the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, U.S., September 2, 2005. There are about a hundred thousand refugees here in Houston at present. Since its arrival at southern U.S. last week, Hurricane Katrina has caused great damage to affected areas, claiming thousands of lives and making hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

AUSTIN, Texas — The state of Texas agreed Thursday to take in three times more refugees from Hurricane Katrina than officials initially expected, bringing the total number of evacuees to at least 73,000.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced that 50,000 more refugees would relocate to Texas, with plans to house 25,000 each in San Antonio and Dallas. Those people would join 23,000 others who are already being sent from New Orleans to the Astrodome in Houston.

Perry declared an emergency disaster for the state, freeing up money to provide services for hurricane victims.

The hurricane “has created emergency conditions in Texas that will require all available resources of both federal and state governments to overcome,” Perry said. “We will do all we can as a state and a people to help our neighbors to the east who have lost so much.”

The governor asked the state Department of Housing and Community Affairs to set aside all vacant low-income housing units for refugees. So far 7,000 units have been reserved for hurricane victims.

    San Antonio builds shelter
A shelter is being created in San Antonio in a huge warehouse at KellyUSA, a city-owned complex that once was home to an Air Force base. In Dallas, the refugees will go to Reunion Arena, the former home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

“Whatever we are called upon to do ... we intend to welcome these people with open arms and to try to give them some dignity which these circumstances have taken away from them,” San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger said.

Perry, who agreed to Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s request Wednesday to take in the evacuees, said Texas naturally wants to help its neighbor.

“I think we all understand it’s by the grace of God that this terrible tragedy didn’t come ashore a few hundred miles west,” Perry said. “And knowing such a catastrophe could have happened here, I think Texans have a very special bond between our neighbors to the east who are going through an absolutely unbelievable ordeal at this point in time.”

    yes,wow,what an evil evil man.

    You are very correct, GiveUsLibertyin2012.

If you want to see a racist, this man is a racist!

Jackson talks about himself at these meetings. Once he told of his days as a waiter at the Jack Tar Hotel in his hom town of Greenville, S.C. Just before leaving the kitchen he would spit into the food of white patrons he hated and then smilingly serve it to them. He did this, he said, "because it gave me psychological gratification." It was something everybody in the audience understood.

My question is: Did big name Democrats who have shared a stage with Jesse Jackson condemn his racist behavior, and if not, should we call those big name Democrats racists, too? The liberals always tell us that silence more often than not signifies agreement and willful consent.

I wouldn't say there wasn't some humanitarian motivation, but I don't think it was completely charitable. That warehouse conversion and the Astrodome weren't free and I would think FEMA paid dearly for their use.

    Here's a for-instance I know about...

FEMA leased a cruise ship for hurricane refugees, docked in Mobile, AL. The ship never left port but FEMA paid double what it would have cost for a ship load of passengers on cruise.

What might have they paid for the shelters in Texas?

That's just one of many, many examples of FEMA spending after Katrina. Those refugees in Texas were eventually housed in hotels, paid by FEMA and later got rentals paid by FEMA. The money spigot was turned wide open and Texas surely made money from the deal. Also, refugees got a lot of financial assistance and those in Texas spent the money in Texas.

While it was good for the refugees to have a place to go, I wouldn't put a halo on Rick Perry for what he did. In the end, it was good business for Texas.

Rick Perry did the right thing by bringing the Katrina victims to Houston so they would have access to food and shelter. Many of them were able to find new jobs in Houston.

What many people don't realize that Rick Perry caught hell in some quarters for his decision. Are you aware the crime rate in Houston increased dramatically after the people from New Orleans relocated there?

There is a direct correlation between the new rates in crime statistics and the relocation of thousands of people from New Orleaans to Houston.

Americans, it seems, still have a love affair with the West. Texas and Wyoming were the big winners in the Census Bureau's annual population estimates, which were released on Wednesday.

In the year ended July 1, Texas added more people than any other state, and Wyoming had the highest growth rate in the nation.

Why did he? Its what people do, they help.
But lets not forget, he didn't do anything that thousands of us didn't do as well....help those in need.
It showed America for what we are. We see a need, we roll up our sleeves, we help.
