Pay $1000/month more for the same place when they raise the rent.

That'll cover my mortgage. I'd retire about twice as soon.

I am actually attempting to promote what amounts to a plan rather like this here in Canada but........
what I have in mind is not directly linked to housing... .(but a high percentage of us Canadians would indeed move to a larger home if
we were to receive something like a taxable... but unconditional Basic Minimum Income) .......

Best Idea for a Better Canada Contest

The world economy seems to be on the brink of another 1929 so... boosting the housing industry seems like a logical response to the seriousness of the situation that we sure seem to be in.

Interesting question. But if the house is already paid off, would the money still be coming? If not, I would say that it is unfair - similar to the government paying off 'some' student loans.

Since my mortgage is paid, I would probably spend it. Of the property taxes and home maintenance are not cheap. We just spent over $40k on a fresh up and remodel.

As for the bigger house, I don’t want it. What I have is large enough.

Which of those options do people think would be best for the economy?

I would think that saving it would actually be the worst option for economic growth.

What makes you guys think that landlords and home sellers wouldn't adjust their prices to account for as much of this $1000 windfall as possible. Second, everybody would have to pay an additional $1000/month in taxes to cover this, or do you think money grows on trees?

    This is a good point.

Capitalism will always find a way to make sure that most people don't have enough money, and that a few have too much. It doesn't matter how hard you try, the market will always find a way to funnel money from the poor to the rich, no matter how much you give away.

I started with nothing (maybe $300) when I left home for the military and I earned everything I have. I denied myself alot of fun to make responsible choices and it has paid off. Even after giving half of everything to a cheating ex wife of 30 years I'm doing well. I just bid on some beautiful land in East Texas with a Texas VLB land loan and I still have cash to build my dream home. I don't need to pay another $1000/month to get a little bit back from the government.

I do what I can to take care of my sons and see that they become self sufficient and hard working. People won't work hard if they aren't allowed to benefit from their work. Being lazy should be painful and poverty is it's reward.

After landlords raise the rent, will it go back down when the "free money" disappears?

do you not believe in supply and demand in renting... I think you are probably right, maybe the government should treat rent like utilities and regulate it

Government is a necessary evil and needs to be used as little as possible. The government drives up the cost of everything they touch. I worked 60 hours per week and the federal government took $30k from me last year. I've voted for my last tax raise. Government can learn to budget like the rest of us.

I do support regulations to protect us from the mega corps though, which are in themselves like mini governments

Buy a woodstove and dig an outhouse. with 124M us households we wouldn't have enough money for anything. At least I could burn currency to keep warm rather than wheelbarrow it to the grocery store for a roll of toilet paper.

As long as productivity is high......
our economy can be quite good no matter how hight the money supply actually is........ The value of the USA and Canadian dollars are backed up by the productivity of Americans and Canadians.........

It looks to me as if whoever had the ability to pass Biden a script for these past two years...... wanted to DECREASE PRODUCTIVITY substantially................ in order to set in motion rather high inflation.........

inflation was caused by the changing spending habits of people around the world during covid - this caused a supply issue

working from home, going out less means more consumer packaging, less commercial packaging, etc.....

Not really... it was caused by people being forced to NOT work and produce.........

I was forced to retire one day before I would have been put on Unpaid Administrative Leave because I refused to take the Covid 19 vaccine......

For the record I had been scheduled to take the Pfizer for May 26, 2021 but..... in the days before my appointment I did a lot of research and I decided that there was no way that I was taking that experimental "vaccine/"

    yes, which changed spending habits

even where people were not forced, many choose not to go out and instead eat at home - these caused major changes in spending habits

we also had oil companies trying to make up for losses of their huge profits during covid and also the bird flu to name just a few issues

True.... but why did the governments of America and Canada sell some variation of Savings Bonds during WWI and WWII?

The best theory that I heard... is that this was done to DECREASE INFLATIONARY pressure on the civilian economy at home as soldiers are no longer able to produce in the USA or Canada... because they are risking their lives in Europe and all around the world....... but they send a lot of their income home to their wives and kids so.........

Savings Bonds were sold... supposedly to finance the war effort........

but in actuality it was to take money out of the economy and thus keep prices more stable at home in the USA and Canada.
