Because it's effective. The term is only used to try to control the thoughts of the weak-minded. To guilt or shame them into changing their position. If you can attach a strong enough negative stigma to something (i.e. accusing people of being afraid of it), then you can often get them to buckle because their ego won't be able to handle the pressure of the insult. It is coercion. Not appeal to reason. It is, in essence, psychological bullying. No matter how it is justified.
