I like the username "Unifier,"..if his name was "Divider" (1st of all, he'd have to change his Progressivism sig to being "Pro-") I would tell him 'dont let the door hit you in the arse!' [IMG]

When I was in the RAF they got us to give blood by promising to replace it with the equivalent quantity of Guiness (Irish stout, Oh Americans), but it was all wicked lies! You still seem to be unifying all over the place, like one of those long-gone airborne draculas! :)

I leaned Chinese, and how the water-torture drip-drip-dripped on American heads, till they joined the tea-bags.

    unifer,
The Boston threads are getting a little silly. Someone starts one and then it is a smorgasbord of what will be "debated."

You admit you troll? You create the quality of debate you want, and can find less retarded(I won't say good) debate in some of the subforums with less traffic.

Next up, no matter how eloquently the position has been laid out? Do you think you lay out positions very eloquently very often? Just wondering?

PS. Not everyone is so entrenched in their opinions. I used to be a run of the mill American "liberal" who supported the Democratic party without thinking about it critically. I no longer do, and am now a far more radical leftist(not marxist mind you). That change has happened not because of this forum, but it did happen while I was a member of this forum. So not everyone is unwilling to listen to opinions and have their mind changed.

PPS. Many of us are also humble enough to know there are many issues we don't understand as well as others. I am far more informed about the Middle East than almost everyone else at this forum, but I know almost nothing about Africa and only a little about east and south asia. Yet some people at this forum want to act as if they are experts on all matters, no matter how ignorant they are of the topic. They take some idiotic talking point from Fox News/MSNBC or some blog they read, and act as if they then know all about the issue. If more people were more humble, the debate would be more fruitful. We could learn about subjects we didn't know about before, while debating those we already know a good deal about. That seems like a good policy. For example I never took science courses beyond the gen ed stuff in undergrad, so I find many of the discussions in the science section to be very interesting and informative.

Ya I try to avoid Middle East discussions and the incessant discussions of Palestine-Israel. People are unwilling to listen, and have their minds made up, despite no understanding or evidence to lead them to that place. I do Middle Eastern studies at a graduate level, am going to pursue a PHD with a focus on Egypt, I have lived extensively in the Middle East, and I speak Arabic. I am involved in sophisticated discourse on the subject on a daily basis, and I find the level of discourse that takes place at this forum on the issue to be embarrassing. People who know nothing about Islam, Middle Eastern countries, etc behave as if they are experts on all things Middle East related. I then use evidence and reason to debate with them, and all I get in return is gibberish, usually about how I hate America(I don't)!!

Please don't go. You're honestly my favorite member on here.

As for the state of the forum, yeah, the Boston threads are way too numerous and were full of people blaming it on White Males, Muslims, etc, before any actual info was released about the suspects.

If someone has a broad array of knowlege like Unifier, I can see where he might be a bit burnt out. Anyone who debates as well and often as many do, just need a break.

I spent my first year mostly in the religion threads. I felt most comfortable there.

Some people post in topics they have very little knowledge of. I think they should ask questions instead of being put down, unless they are just trolling.

Hang in there Unifier. Maybe go to "Smarties bar" and kick your shoes off!

Oh, I totally troll when I'm bored. When I first came here about three years or so ago, I was humble, open-minded, and interested in serious discussion. Hence the screen name. But after being in this environment for so long, I've found that it's just more enjoyable now to just say whatever whenever as long as I find it amusing. Sometimes it's silly. Sometimes it's hostile. Sometimes it's hardcore partisan. And then sometimes I'll actually find myself in a pleasant intellectual discussion that goes somewhere. I'm just not interested in pulling teeth anymore. If it happens, it happens. Cool. But I'm not going to force it. In the meantime, I'd rather just be a fountain of self-interest. Whatever that may manifest itself in.

I think when I'm being serious I do. People seem to respond to them as such. At least the people who are capable of such responses. Let's be honest. A lot of people here are lost causes. But the bright and reasonably enlightened ones can usually address my points pretty well even if they disagree. And I do appreciate that.

I hear you. I have had some rather pleasant discussions with a few people who I can tell I've gotten through to. And whether or not they changed their views in the long term as a result, I at least feel satisfied knowing that for that moment they heard me. That's always been my big thing. I cannot stand to be misrepresented. I say this a lot in my debates on here. If you want to disagree with my positions, disagree. But all that I ask is that you represent me accurately before doing so. Most people can't seem to do this. They get stuck in this cycle of straw men. And I honestly think that's where the bulk of this country's problems truly lie. Not in difference of ideas but in lack of communication.

That's kind of where I am on economics, to tell you the truth. I just take a basic common sense approach there of what works for me and seems to have worked for all of the successful people I model my life after daily. But there's tons of that stuff I don't have a clue about. The details of this and that often go over my head. Which is one reason I actually read more in the economics section than I post.

And I do know what you mean about having a field of expertise and how frustrating it can sometimes be to have some half-wit try to challenge you on something you know that they don't know anything about. For me, my subjects are gender/attraction science, psychology, and sociology. While I have no plaque from a fancy university hanging on my wall, I have the equivalent of a six year degree in these subjects that I've acquired through first hand life experience alongside some of the most knowledgeable people in these fields. In fact, the knowledge I acquired in these areas was what originally got me interested in politics. Because I began to notice how all of these things fit into the context of the world around me. So when I see some idiot trying to claim that man and woman are the same thing except for the plumbing, I just want to roll my eyes and say, "You're in over your head, son. You're just regurgitating what your environment has told you."

I would be a bit disappointed in you Unifier (not that my opinion matters), were you to simply stop contributing to this place. I too have paid attention and Adapted (changed) based on not just the "New Mentality" of political positions but also find your input to be valuable and entertaining. Something of a fresh air situation as you are amongst the few conservative minds that manage to avoid seeming purely negative.
This forum is not well served when the best members it has drawn in decide to give up.
