Opening gambit to stabilize climate, a carbon tax or invest in turning deserts green?

  1. A carbon tax or cap and trade system of course.... you idiot!

I just thought of another possible variation on this that also might be worthy of consideration?

I have always wondered how it feels to be completely duped by a politician.

    - - - Updated - - -

The Earth is greening already. Thanks CO2. Historically, Earth has been in a CO2 deficit. The current AGW mass hysteria is like someone waking up at night and deciding it needs to stay dark all the time.

I guess that Mitt himself might not like this angle..... but imagine that Mitt wins in 2012, becomes President, but his much more pro-Israel stance perhaps inspires a higher level of terrorist activity.........… perhaps terrorists set off a nuke on the W. A. I. S. and the same results occur by January 1, 2013 as was found on the Dr. Chet Snow research.

One of the best ways to prevent something like this from occurring could be a peace deal between Jordan, Canada, America and Israel that focuses on heavy investment in turning deserts green.

Theoretically, ocean levels could be lowered if we desalinated a huge quantity of ocean level and pumped it into the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. Doing something like this would give us a buffer zone............. just in case the W. A. I. S. began to crack and slide at a faster rate.

True.............. it was speculated that higher levels of atmospheric CO2 is playing a role in certain parts of the Sahara Desert beginning to turn somewhat more green. That is an excellent point! CO2 is plant food....... and it is pretty astonishing how the earth can somewhat recover and go toward stability, no matter how unwise we humans are!

    Situation ethics!

Sometimes it is possible to accomplish a lot of good through the use of methods and tools, that are imperfect.

My apology to Green Party Leader Ms. Elizabeth May could perhaps lead to some positive changes.

    http://www.politicalforum.com/canad...008-campaign-my-apology-ms-elizabeth-may.html

Ignorance shown in my 2008 campaign, my apology to Ms. Elizabeth May!

Back in 2008 when I campaigned for the office of municipal councilor my ignorance regarding the importance of reducing atmospheric carbon is out there for all to see!

I am wondering if the information regarding the increasing acidity of the oceans can alter how we view the importance of altering our economy?

If the film Inconvenient Truth is a marker for making decisions, then it is a very bad decision indeed. There are so many errors and so much alarmism that it should make anyone wary.

Rising sea levels, depending on who you want to believe are accelerating, not accelerating, slowing down. Take your pick. They are all backed up by peer reviewed papers, which is another problem in this politically charged consensus atmosphere

Peer review is a way to get fame in scientific circles. Look at Michael Mann's hockey stick. So many problems with it but the politicians took off with it making Mann, a scientist, famous. It went to his head. Economists like to say there are no bad people, just bad incentives. The incentives to publish today are corrupting the scientific literature and the media that covers it. Until those incentives change, we’ll all get fooled again.

If you want to listen to someone much smarter than Al Gore on Climate Change, listen to Freeman Dyson. He adds some reality to the discussion along with a suggestion for sequestering CO2.

What do you think of the theory that the amount of H2O being added to the central region of Antarctica is the main reason that we have not so far experienced significant rise in ocean levels?

It seems like a serious amount of ice has cracked and slid into the oceans from the land based Greenland Ice Pack but...… the amount of H2O being added to Antarctica.... has fully offset this trend?!

Besides being breathtakingly expensive? Cost overruns, many unresolved technical issues, inflated claims, it may be a small answer but all of the CCS projects are pretty expensive. Theirs is estimated to cost 1.5 billion and there is one in the US that is up to 6 billion. Many plants have converted from coal to natural gas because it is less expensive and that produces less CO2 as coal is the biggest producer. All of the costs of a plant get passed on to the public eventually. I don't know if it is the answer but maybe 10 years down the road the results will be in.

There are so many unknowns in Antarctica as with much of climate change science in general. Global sea ice is above the 1979-2008 norm due to the Southern Hemisphere sea ice growth. There are volcanoes under West Antarctica. Much of the undercutting of glaciers is due to ocean currents but that is also often attributed to changes in wind circulation. The Pacific has actually cooled and it covers half of the planet.

On land, Antarctica only loses ice if it does not snow. It is too cold to melt it so if it does not snow, it evaporates due to how dry it is there. All glaciers flow downhill so that continues no matter what. The predictions of ice loss are in West Antarctica only and science continues to try and figure things out there.

One of the problems I have following the climate science debate is how it is one thing one day, and something else the next. For instance, when this exploded, no one thought there would be the current hiatus in warming. When it came along, scientists started scrambling to explain it. Now the explanations are centering on natural variability (as many skeptics have said for years) with the caveat that warming has not stopped, it is just hiding. The problem here is that natural variability has hijacked the global warming certainty.

The hypothesis of CO2 warming is sound, but only as a simple problem. How it works in a wicked problem like the climate is what is questioned by many. There are so many other feedbacks that are known and not modeled very well (like clouds) or unknown and are not accounted for. It is not a known fact how changing solar weather affects Earth or how Earths own changing magnetic field affects it.

Another problem with modeling and hypothesis is that it takes decades to find out if any of them are right. The early CO2 hypothesis has already proven to be falsified by the hiatus.

I just think it should give people pause before declaring stupid comments like 'the science is settled'.

If you are intent on sequestering CO2, I like Freeman Dyson's idea of turning it into topsoil. Plants eat CO2 and by creating more topsoil, that CO2 is buried in the ground and mostly stays there. He gives figures on how much CO2 can be sequestered that way and it would not cost nearly as much or hurt the poor like making energy more costly.

Scientists publicly admit mistakes and change their viewpoint with conflicting evidence. I find that more impressive than those who vehemently stick to their ideas even when they fly in the face of logic and facts.

Every genius scientist who ever lived, from Aristotle to Einstein, made mistakes, had to retract theories, and start again.

I love the idea of hiding CO2 in topsoil!

I had not heard of it until reading your post!

You have gotten me into another productive area of research!

    http://www.wired.com/2007/08/freeman-dyson-m/
I have to disagree with his idea of genetically engineering plants………. it seems better to choose types of plants such as types of bamboo that I have read often grow a root system for up to five years before shooting up into the air rather rapidly.

China has used bamboo quite effectively in their "Green Wall of China" that is keeping the Gobi from growing too quickly.

Do you know if the CO2 that is captured in this way can also be added somehow to topsoil?

I have to admit that I am not entirely thrilled with the idea of pumping it down into oil wells???!

I would prefer to see it used somehow in projects like the Sahara Forest Project.

The problem with trying to green deserts is that it is naturally dry there because of the Hadley cell circulation. It would take a lot of infrastructure to keep it moist enough to grow much of anything. That is costly.

I agree it will be costly….. but I am seriously thinking that it would perhaps be significantly LESS costly than building dikes and dams and levees to protect the world's cities that are at a low sea level.

You made an extremely important point when you mentioned that there are volcanoes in West Antarctica!

We are PAST THE TIPPING POINT!!

The moment large amounts of Methane Gas started bubbling out of Permafrost, Alaskan and Siberian Lakes...and bubbling up from the BOTTOM OF ALL THE EARTH'S OCEANS.....as there are MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF METHANE...CH4 GEL at the bottom of all oceans and the CO2 Level has increased Temps. of the Ocean's enough so that this CH4 Gel is bubbling up as CH4 or METHANE GAS!!

CH4 Gas holds in Heat in our Atmosphere at least 72 Times greater than CO2.

    Basically WE ARE SCREWED!!

Global dimming has nothing to do with CO2 but with aerosols. They have been reduced and is not suggested that is one of the reasons for the warming as global brightening was increased during the 70's to 90's warming.

Yes………… barring a series of what would seem to be off the scale spectacular miracles…….and/or……….. barring truly brilliant and inspired strategies by political leaders……….. we are indeed screwed!

It was interesting that in the Helen Wambach Ph. D. and Dr. Chet Snow study of visions of what appeared like lives………… in the future….. the numbers indicated something like a ninety to ninety five percent depopulation of the earth over the next century or so.

    http://www.carolmoore.net/articles/helenwambach.html
On the other hand…….. we do seem to be in what may turn out to be an alternate time line and it is actually shocking how much better things are going this time around so………….. perhaps we are due for what would appear to be both miracles as well as brilliant leadership…… that will prevent the unnecessary deaths of millions and perhaps even of billions of people????!

I on the other hand favour taking a serious look at the rather brilliant monetary policy done by President Lincoln that saved American taxpayers roughly four billion dollars in interest payments.

We have deliberately defined ourselves as practically bankrupt…… one reason is to weaken or even break unions…….. that a segment of the population regard as one of the greatest evils in existence!

Being as this is the humour section…… I may as well link us into another discussion that I have going that would fit in here quite well………..

As you know………….. there is powerful evidence that beings with great technology are parked very near us…….. who are capable of assisting by stabilizing our climate…….. at least partly?!

The English word "miracle" gives a somewhat false connotation……. I have very good reason to believe that all the events that we might term "miraculous" have a basis in technology from fifth, sixth, seventh dimensional space - time and higher?!

Will UFO's assist in bringing peace to the world?????
I personally am now wide open to this possibility...... but I sure wasn't ready for the idea until I read this part of the NDE account of Christian Andreason:
