Individuals or the system?

    We were once told that we needed to stop (or at least slow) the spread of the coronavirus because there were simply not enough hospital beds in America to take care of all those potential patients, if it should get out of hand.

    There are two possible interpretations here.

    One is that this was meant as a deep concern for the American people, and their health and welfare.

    The other--and this is the one that I gravitate toward--is that those in charge simply did not wish to overburden the system--more for The System than for any individuals.

    What do others think?
