If you think about it.....what we now call a Christmas Tree is what Pagans celebrating the Winter Solstice did thousands of years ago...decorate a tree.

In many places in the U.S. it is called a Holiday Tree and such tree decorating has about as much to do with Religion as a Mettalica Concert! LOL!

Now if we are talking about a Manger Nativity Scene in front of City Hall....well...if they allow that then they should allow all other religions the opportunity to display something expressing their own faith.

As far as Atheists complaining about such things...I am close being an agnostic and although I absolutely believe in the separation of Church and State...as long as all faiths...or visual demonstration by those without faith such as signs on the town common stating Atheistic Ideals...as long as everyone is represented...I don't really see a problem.

Maybe, but how many cities in the US use public funds to put up Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, folk religion, or atheist holiday displays?

and better question, why should they? lets just have the city council vote on this, and if they consistently vote christian and christian only the minorities should accept that its not their country (as in their culture and religion not being what shaped the country).

in sweden we have public schools celebrating saint lucy's day. that's public funds going to celebrating a catholic saint. shouldnt swedes be allowed to do that? its called keeping your culture

even if nobody is pagan anymire the fact remeins that we are dancing around a pole resembelling a penis qhich is fertilising the ground, and the whole thing is obviously religious in nature. as with christmas you still have the name christ in it, and santa is a combination of germanic and british folklore and saint nick. its impossible to get rid of the religious themes because its just a religious celebratio to begin with. but my point ia that its nothing bad with having religion in it. everything has religion in it almost, but they are also the culture of the people. thus i think we should look at it more as people expressing their culture rather than religion. culture must be expressed through the government sometimes. see my reply to prof sarcastic also.

Well said, our religious holidays, how we use dates, days of the week ect do reflect both our pagan and Christian heritage.

    Sunday -- Sun's day
    Monday -- Moon's day
    Tuesday -- Tiu's day
    Wednesday -- Woden's day (Odin)
    Thursday -- Thor's day
    Friday -- Freya's day
    Saturday -- Saturn's day

Yep we have chick and warlord gods, awaken us at your peril.

to be fair, the question wasn't directed at you really, I was agreeing and adding my thoughts.

indeed they do, any any attempt to 'secularise' everything will either lead to the ripping apart our heritage, or people applying a double standard to traditions they happen to like, like christmas.

How many times do you need to explain to Americans that you are so much smarter, before you will realize you are not?

It's so sad that we gave up our own religion and embraced that of freaking jews, of all people. For people like us who prefer an alternative history there's always CK2: the old gods to play.

when me being smarter than them stops being true I guess. and seemingly, that's not going to happen very soon.

no people are born that way, it's simply an unnatural and contraintuitive behaviour. screw pacifism! paganism would be awesome, although we could drop the blot thing to be honest.

Would you consider yourself an average Swede?

If so you may be right. Tho it may be what we call "damning with faint praise".

    IQ ranking:

    1, Hong Kong....107

Let us know if you ever catch up.

    10. Sweden.........101
    19. USA................99

i wouldnt consider myself an average swede in many regards no.

the average IQ of countries says little of my intelligence, and we are not supposed to discuss that either. the thing is simply that many people here dont understand that narion and country arent the same thing.

How many times do we have to tell you that you are not only wrong but our country and nation is built on the idea of valuing all. We are a tapestry that includes minority ideas, peoples, and civilizations. One of the things that makes us great is the idea that no one group owns the culture. So why don't you stop making a fool of yourself and go figure out why your self-esteem is so low.

It is already starting hence the reason for this thread.

No problem what so ever with Christians celebrating a lie, just let every other religion celebrate in the same way for their "special" days, including decorations in or on public buildings.

Why are you doing this? Are you not realising that you and the others are embarassing yourselves by continually showing that you don't know the difference between nation and country. Here, let me help you http://geography.about.com/cs/politicalgeog/a/statenation.htm

And in case you're too lazy to open a link:

A State (note the capital "S") is a self-governing political entity. The term State can be used interchangeably with country.

A nation, however, is a tightly-knit group of people which share a common culture. A nation-state is a nation which has the same borders as a State.

seriously, this is simply silly. drop it and I might just forget about this ignorance.

valuing all isn't contradictionary with being white and christian. There is one group which have clearly defined american culture wheter you like it or not, and that's white christians, protestants specifically.

My self esteem isn't low at all, and it's highened every time one of you political illiterates pretend that nation and country are the same thing, and deny the history of your own nation.

right, so what have they renamed it to? what do they have instead of santa and instead of a christmas tree? What reason for celebration are they going to have instead of jesus' birth? Thus far it seems that christmas has still kept all those things, and is thus a religious celebration.

And pretend that america is just as muslim, hindu, jewish etc as it is christian?

So that's what you've been doing eh? Stalking me waiting for something that might be construed as vaguely anti-semetic? Yes, do go ahead and ignore that I'm quite supportive of Israel.

I used freaking to emphasise that out of all people, jews and their mythology are probably as irrelevant as could be to germanic peoples, and that I find it funny that we, the conquerors of Rome, ended up adopting the religion of a people that spent most of their history being an insignificant tribe in a semi-desert being constantly pwned by other peoples. History sure is unpredictable.

Hmm, well I don't see much about Santa in religion, do you, nor a tree either (unless you are using poetic license to associate a tree with a cross)

Why celebrate an event that didn't happen, perhaps we should all celebrate mans landing on the moon on July 19th 1969 as that didn't happen either ...

Seems to be a habit of Christianity stealing and bastardizing other non-christ related events and then claiming them as their own.

What is it with you, you are like one of those American "fundies', who make things up and then talk about them as if they are real.

I know English better than you do, and I surely do not need language lessons from some Swede.
