new study from the Survey Center on American Life shows that the "open-minded" mentality of many liberals is likely a bunch of hot air.

The Survey Center interviewed 2,019 adults, reporting a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points, in its May 2021 American Perspectives Survey to analyze how the tense political climate impacts friendships.

While only 15 percent of people have ended a friendship over political disagreements, there is a clear ideologicaltilt when the rift political differences can cause is broken down.

"Democrats are twice as likely as Republicans are to report having ended a friendship over a political disagreement (20 percent vs. 10 percent). Political liberals are also far more likely than conservatives are to say they are no longer friends with someone due to political differences (28 percent vs. 10 percent, respectively)," the group explained.

The study also discovered that liberal women in particular are most likely to end a friendship with someone of opposing views….

it has long been widely known that the left is much more intolerant of opposing opinion and beliefs than the right is. It is visible clearly on social media. I can’t imaging unfriending someone over a political disagreement.

What’s even harder to imagine is breaking up a real in person long term or life time friendship over a transitory political or philosophical disagreement.

I don't understand this tendency. If you want to change hearts and minds what use is it to isolate your ideological opponents among themselves where they hear no criticism?

"Change hearts and minds"!?! In what alternate universe do people change their "hearts and minds" when they hear criticism of their ideological beliefs? Here in THIS one they simply cling tighter to them.

I took care of the problem by never having long term relationships.

If you read further into the study you will see that it is Trump more than any other politics that cause the friendships to end. But I do agree with you that it is really weird that this could end friendships.

    Not really accurate.

The survey methodology is sound. They randomly choose participants from the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, which is one of the better attempts at mirroring the US general population. The data was weighted for all the standard variable, race, age, education, region and income.

There is no good reason to doubt the survey other than you not liking the outcome.

I was brought up in a leftist family, and I agree it was pretty harsh if you didn't comply. It took a long time for my mother to come to terms with the fact that I wasn't as socialist as her. My partner's right wing family was much more tolerant.

Nevertheless, I have seen reports of an enormous amount of upheaval related to Qanon and the election in the US recently, which is ripping families apart. Kids are afraid to speak out or argue against Q parents in case they are disowned. I wonder if this has been factored into the 'survey'?

I just did a quick mental run through and I have no recollection of EVER talking to a friend about politics. The only exception is now and it's more because of Trump than politics, specifically. My closest friend is a Trump supporter. She doesn't watch the news, She doesn't fact check. She gets her "news" from FaceBook. In general, she is a very spontaneous person and rarely gives things a second thought. I still love her. I just think she's bonkers.

In what universe? Not in this digital one, that's for sure. Person to person you'd be surprised what you can do if you listen respectfully and empathize with their viewpoint.

You're not going to change someone's core values but you can allow them to view their means to enact those values in a different light, perhaps one they had not considered.

I know it happens because it happened to me.

World nut daily bringing you far right conspiracy theories since 1997

They were pretty good quiet during the Trump years.

But let us say the premise is correct I would postulate that the reason democrats give up on GOP “friends” is that over the last four years during Trump “How do you like being owned?”

I give ZERO credence to ALL of the rightwing biased survey sites including places like Rasmussen that deliberately SKEW their results for partisan purposes.

The INTENT behind this "survey" was to provide "red meat" to the extremist rightwingers and it served that purpose exactly.

Given the odious behavior of supporters of the biggest *LOSER* it is hardly surprising that normal people are SHUNNING them and given that those supporters are INTOLERANT of everyone who disagrees with them I have little doubt that they were making no effort to try and maintain friendships.

The results are NOT an indictment of Dems but rather a REFLECTION of how cults operate when it comes to cutting off ties with everyone who does not belong to it. Ask anyone who has lost a friend who joined a cult and they will tell you the same thing.

In essence this "survey" was just a REINFORCEMENT of the typical cult pattern to "justify" that that the cult members are being "wronged" by those outside of it.

    https://www.goodtherapy.org/blog/psychpedia/cult-definition

The "survey" is a CLASSIC attempt to DEVALUE those who do NOT belong to the "cult".

Do these sound like the words of the extremists rightwingers...

Conspiracy theories, misinformation, COVID-19, and the 2020 election
Conspiracy theories have a long history in the US, but have become increasingly salient in recent years. From QAnon to the antivaxxer movement and birtherism, these unfounded theories continue to circulate online and find adherents. The September 2020 American Perspectives Survey explores public perceptions about a variety of debunked and discredited claims relating to politics and public health. The survey also examines the prevalence of misinformation about COVID-19, confidence in the media and concerns about the administration of the 2020 election.

Canadians are lining up for covid vaccinations. They want this over and know we need to get people vaccinated. We're arguing over getting vaccinated.

What's going on here is nuts.

There are a lot of unvaccinated people for another wave in the Fall.

If the virus continues circulating, people will continue staying away from malls, movies, restaurants, hotels, airplanes. Not everyone, of course, but enough to hurt consumer demand for services the economy is capitalized to produce (billions for cruise ships). They more virus circulating, the more people will pull back. It would take years to write off the capital if the nature of consumer demand changes.

Sure, we'll still have cruise ships, but fewer of them. Fewer restaurants, clubs, bars, theaters, concerts--lots of service sector jobs lost.

People will eventually figure out they won't get their lives back as long as the virus is around.

People who have been infected have natural immunity and have no need for a vaccination.

any friend that got obnoxious in their views, left or right, I would cut ties with at least for a while until they calmed down

anyone at work that tries to push religion or politics hard, I will try to avoid in future

We will get our lives back one way or the other.

If you are worried about the virus, get a vaccine or wear a properly rated n95 mask. Let us be free and pay the consequences of that freedom. It has no effect on you.

I am not giving up our culture of personal freedom and personal responsibility for your nanny state BS.
There will be HUGE consequences of continuing lockdowns and making people wear masks. The Land of the oppressed and scared or the free and the Brave? I am gonna be free and brave.

Trump didn’t cause that. The extreme words and behaviors of those who hated him and took out their anger on his supporters in their own lives and environment that did that.
