In the past nine months, almost 50 peacekeepers in Afghanistan have been killed by Afghan soldiers or policemen: this in spite of the fact that the U.S. has ceased its program of training them.

The attack on Camp Bastion (directly attached to Camp Leatherneck in Helmand Province) was carried out by Taliban wearing American uniforms. They didn't get anywhere near Prince Harry but they destroyed two fuel trucks and three Harrrier jump jets and a helicopter. Talk about a failure of security.

So what is the plan in Afghanistan now? We apparently can't count on the local army and police force and draw downs in manpower will only leave the remaining troops more vulnerable to an emboldened Taliban. This looks to me like a mini-replay of Vietnam, with Pakistan playing the USSR and the Taliban being a lot more ruthless and detestable than the North Vietnamese were (and they were no knights in shining armor).

It's a shame the US cannot unleash its arsenal on these folks in Afghanistan and nearby countries. We probably bombed every building standing, but I'm sure a 1/4 of 1/4 of 1/4 of 1/4 of the TANK shells we use in our Abrahms would be enough to sink Afgh. Into the ocean. And hopefully Obama does so.

Sadly not; nobody in history, irrespective of firepower or military superiority has been able to conquer or subdue Afghanistan-oh, except Alexander the Great (died 323BC). All that your awesome bombing will do is make small rocks out of big rocks in a country the size of Texas, much of it inaccessible mountains. Sorry, but America and the coalition are just the latest in a long line of losers.

The Soviet Union tried this approach with the Afghans and they did destroy most of the buildings in the country but failed to beat the Afghans into submission. As for the tank shells, they don't work well on guerillas and in built-up areas jammed with civilians. As for sinkng Afghanistan into the ocean, you couldn't do that with our entire nuclear arsenal.

Does anyone else have a more realistic approach?

Air raids with crop dusters filled with bacon grease. Then they have no choice but to accept HayZeuss as savior and ditch Isslime for a tiny bit more sane brainwashing system.
They're already morons so just give them one more measly "m" and they can join Mittens cult..

The Mongols and Tamburs did a pretty sprice up job themselves, and I guess the slow spread of Islam into the country late 6th century.

But Alexander's method seemed to work pretty well - Kill everyone.

The Afghans seem to be doing a good job of that themselves, shooting women and decapitating children.

Well, that’s exotic Afghanistan, the jewel of Asia. I don’t suppose that war will ever end there.
USSR got this headache in 1980s. US got this headache now. Who’ll be the next?..

Four more American soldiers were killed today when an Afghan Army officer turned his gun on them and shot his American allies dead.

It seems to me that the slaughter of the Afghans would be down on the same level as the Nazis. Industrialized genocide. It would be the ultimate admission of failure.

Just leave. The Afghan people had nothing to do with 9/11. Most of them didn't give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about it let alone know what the World Trade Center was. They aren't fighting us because they're terrorists, they're fighting us for the same reason a lot of confederate soldiers fought the Union, simply because the Union soldiers were on their land.

They won't stop either, not until we are forced to become Nazis or worse.
