Would Blacks think something was pretty fugged-up if a White actor played the part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a movie? Taken to such extremes, this kind of casting in entertainment media is bizarre, offensive, and, frankly, STOOPID....

Its a freaking fairy-tale and elfs don't actually exist, so how do you argue they should all be white? Martin Luther King Jr was an actual person. IF there is anything woke here, its you and those who are offended by seeing a black actor in a hollywood movie.

Do you seriously think that's what this is about? Seeing a black actor in a Hollywood movie? Something that's been happening for a century?

Thank you for clarifying that the entirety of your complained is based on your refusal to read these posts and nothing more. Try reading the post of mine you had quoted when you asked that question. But, then again, we wouldn't be here if anything you were asking me was based on any kind of critical reflection.

Then what is the outrage about the half-black 'elf' all about, other that the fact that people think he should be white because 'elfs' (imaginary creatures) should be white?

It will tell you secrets, but it will also portray Dwarves as gay!

I thought the complaint was that the main dwarf's wife is black and kids half-black.

Go back and try reading the post of mine that you quoted when asking that question. It matches exactly with what I've said here. But since you are fond of asking me to do your homework for you, here's what I said that you quoted and asked for material on:

"Nothing in Tolkien's writings says that all elves are white. And the MATERIAL HE WAS DRAWING FROM mentions dark-skinned elves."

You asked what material, so I pointed you to the Eddas. Because the Eddas were material he was DRAWING FROM, and they specifically mention dark-skinned elves. Hell, I might even be wrong about that. I've only seen the Germanic prefix "svart" in the context of "swarthy" or "of dark color/complexion," but if there is a German speaker here that wants to correct me on that assumption, have at it.

At no point did I claim Tolkien wrote the Eddas. What I said was that he DREW FROM them, as any literate person can see.

Well, there were very few female dwarves, and their species didn't even really have sexual dimorphism, so I'd be very surprised if there weren't gay dwarves.

The difference here being that MLK was (checks notes) a real, historical figure who was (checks notes) actually black in real life and his race (checks notes) is a pretty damn important part of any story a film would tell about him.

But we've had non-white historical figures recast as white TONS of times. See basically any movie about Jesus, see Exodus: Gods and Kings, see 21 or Argo.

Oh. So, now the differentiation provides for differences between fiction and non-fiction...? And the milieu of everything that comprised the 'world' that J. R. R. Tolkien created is open for the 'entertainment industry' to manipulate and mangle at will? Why is that surprising?

After all, in the fictional Shakespearean-inspired trilogy, "The Hollow Crown", the creators saw nothing ludicrous about casting a BLACK woman as the 'freaking' QUEEN OF FRANCE. And non-fiction history will assure you that among the many queens of France, there has never been a Black woman! Why would anyone do that?! To deliberately mar what could have been an otherwise marginally-acceptable production with a needless distraction?!

Nevertheless, if this kind of politically-correct, mangled mashup in "Rings" is pleasing to you, enjoy it to the fullest.

Tolkien didn't create this series, end even if he did, so what? Well, feel free to be enraged about the color of imaginary creatures like elfs. I guess it doesn't take much for some people to feel offended.

I read that the actors on the show have been subjected to harassment and threats, and I wondered who would be so offended by seeing blacks in a TV show, and now I see the anger here I realize that some people take things like TV shows waaaaay too seriously.

Then, let me take the occasion to agree with you, at least insofar as the repugnancy of anyone threatening actors because they are faithfully playing the parts they were cast to play! Audiences have always had a "Boo! Hiss!" for villains in dramatic presentations, but harassment and threats against innocent actors is, indeed, unacceptable.

At least we Americans are still free enough to be able to watch whatever we want (mostly), and that applies equally to all of us, regardless of our individual sense of preference and taste....

Oh, and if you want a great 'entertainment' experience sometime, I suggest you watch "The Conqueror", starring JOHN WAYNE in the role of the legendary Mongol chieftain, Genghis Khan! Audiences in the 1950's howled with laughter at the ridiculousness of such a thing. Cheers!

You're here, not because you care about Tolkien, or have any interest in the show, but because of some interest in "dark elves."

That makes me question if you actually read this thread at all or just jumped in half way.

Now is it dark skinned elves you were talking about or dark elves? Tolkien didn't write about dark skinned elves, but he did write about dark elves. If your argument is that there are dark skinned elves in Tolkien, then no, your wrong. If you are arguing that there are other sources that have dark skinned elves, maybe, I've only heard you claim that, but eh, I don't care, because we were not talking about other sources, we're talking about Tolkien.

If you are arguing that Tolkien's elves are dark skinned, then no, you're wrong. If you are arguing any other point, then nobody cares.

Yes and the issue is Tolkien. If you're not a fan, OK, but if not, what is your purpose in this thread?

With Tolkien's writings, I spoke of dark elves. With the SOURCES that Tolkien DREW FROM, I mentioned dark-skinned elves. That was explicit in the post you originally quoted.

I read the books back in the day, and saw the movies, but now I can't help but wonder about the anger over the skin color of some characters in freaking fantasy movie. Most people don't even notice, while some others react like someone threw acid on their face.
