    Hi,

In the far future all stars will supernova into black holes or neutron stars, all black holes will decay via hawking radiation, the last remaining objects will be iron stars which slowly decay due to hypothesized proton decay. The universe will accelerate so quick that inflation at the Planck length will exceed the speed of light and that'll be the end of it.

In light of such theories, is anything really sustainable? Aren't all processes therefore unsustainable and only separated by a matter of degree in their sustainability?

Coal will get us through another few decades, gas a little longer than that, there are 4 billion tonnes of useful Uranium in the ocean, so many centuries of that, a few million years of fusion from Deuterium in sea water, the sun explodes in a few billion years, stars as a category will cease to exist after that, and eventually entropy reaches such a high level that extracting any work whatsoever becomes impossible.

The ship is going down and as captain we have no choice but to go down with it. Maybe slowly plug holes in the hull until we inevitably hit the iceberg of the big rip.

    Thoughts?
