Found this to be interesting: By Carolingian times, the Catholic Church had begun to to make a significant impact on Frankish family life and marital and sexual attitudes. Marriages in Frankish society were arranged by fathers or uncles to meet the needs of the extended family. Although wives where expected to be faithful to their husbands, Frankish aristocrat often kept concubines, either slave girls or free women from their estates. Even the "most Christian king" Charlemagne had a number of concubines. To limit such sexual license, the Church increasingly emphasized it's role in marriage and attempted to Christianize it. Although marriage was a civil arrangement, priests tried to add their blessings and strengthen the concept of a special marriage ceremony. Moreover, the church tried to serve as caretaker of marriage by stipulating that a girl over fifteen mist give her consent to her guardian's choice of a husband or her marriage would not be valid in the eyes of the church. - Western Civilization Volume I: To 1715, 8th Edition I find this to be very interesting.
