The US has nuclear weapons and so does Russia, and unlike so much of the Russian military, their nuclear weapons work really well. They can't protect themselves against our weapons and we can't protect ourselves against theirs. But we've ignored their repeated warnings and enrolled nations ever closer to Moscow into our military club; NATO. We can and most likely do place short-range nuclear weapons anywhere in NATO, and we place longer ranged ones as close as Germany, Italy and Turkey. We do get some money by selling weapons to NATO countries and that is obviously very important, but shouldn't we give our survival instinct some weight in the expansion of NATO? What is your opinion on the vexing question: Are we sane?
So you are suggesting what, we allow Putin to expand without consequences. He can just invade a country, execute the citizens, level the cities, and then go to Disneyland? You know they tried that with Hitler, right? The only way to deal with war criminals like Putin is through strength. That is the only thing they respect. Rolling over and playing dead just makes your a target.
Russia is trying to operate its economy independent of the west. Most notably, these other countries tried to do that too: Libya, Iraq, Iran, Syria... It seems that nations operating independently from the global banking system is a bigger threat than global nuclear war... but a threat to whom? At any rate, we cant do to Russia what we did to those other countries. Russia has to be made to be the aggressor, and itwould seem our passive aggressive strategy of surrounding them with NATO has payed off. Putin didn't just walk into it, he jumped head first.
Answer: I regard US foreign policy as insane. Now it may not be insane for individual players to support it, since they may be benefiting individually with trying to stoke a war with Russia, but for the average American, there are no benefits and for the nation as a whole, there are no benefits.
We have supplied weapons and intelligence to Russia's enemies before without a big bang finishing us all off. We'll be fine now.
