Christmas is a designated Federal Holiday in the United States, but Hanukkah isn't. I read sometime ago that in NYC Jewish police officers volunteer to work on Christmas Day so their fellow Christian police officers can have the day off to be with their families. That's very nice of the Jewish police officers! In my opinion, I know Hanukkah is celebrated for 8 days but I think it would be fair to designate the first day of Hanukkah as a Federal Holiday so Jewish people can stay home with their families. To be fair, do you think the first day of Hanukkah should be designated as a Federal Holiday?
I would rather see one holiday designated for all religions, and then those of different religions can barter that day with people of other religions to have off the religious (or non) day they observe. In seriousness, even though I would tend to agree with your statement, it would also mean every observed religious holiday should be recognized as a federal holiday. And to tell the truth, I'm not willing to pay for more days off for Federal employees when I don't get as many days off as they do already.
