Neil Macdonald: The problem with too much democracy

I kind of agree with this guy. Same with freedom, you can have too much of it.

They say freedom and democracy are good things, but food is also a good thing, and if you have too much of it, it cause cause very bad health problems.

    What do you think?

Too much democracy is absolutely a bad thing.
Democracy is pure majority rule, with nothing to stand between the will of the majority and the rights of the minority.
Our founders understood that, which is why this country isn't a democracy.

It isn't so much that too much democracy is bad.

The problem is when a democracy has too much power. Democratic rule is fine as long as the amount of authority that government has is strictly limited.

A democratic government with unlimited authority leads to a quick end of all individual rights and a rapid decline of the society overall.

You have to have a constitution to make democracy work, I think. And it has to be really difficult to alter that constitution, and basically impossible to circumvent it.

The principle of democracy is merely there to ensure a smooth transfer of power. America has never been about democracy. It's about *freedom*. That freedom is ensured by the rule of law, which protects every citizen from tyranny, including the tyranny of the majority.

That's what the Constitution is about; telling the government what it must do and what it must never do.

I'd argue it's a lot harder to have too much freedom than it is to have too much democracy.

After all, democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.

It's definitely harder to have too much freedom than it is to have too much democracy. People always vote for more control over each other. They almost never vote for freedom.

Sorta. It used to be that one would be happy to have a lot. Now to be happy one has to have a lot and make sure everyone else has little.

Freedom requires personal responsibility. Many people seem to be happy to give up a lot of freedom in order to avoid personal responsibility. They don't seem to understand or care that doing so is really selling yourself into slavery.

You honestly didn't understand that, did you.

    :disbelief:

Okay, I'll change the players for you:

Democracy is two minimum-wage workers and a Union Guy voting to determine who should pay the most taxes to the Government.

    That better for you?

Technically yes. I mean if you had the freedom to kill anyone you wanted that would be bad.

Same with democracy. If democracy was forced into families and kids had a vote against parents we'd have a kid run country. NOOOO!

Too much democracy should never be a problem in the United States because of the Constitution and the Separation of Powers model. Besides, freedom in this country was always about the right to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. The government's only job was to defend all of these rights. Unfortunately a lot has changed and people lost the will to be responsible and accountable for themselves, and in result, our country has become more socialistic and less free.

The real problem isn't that there is "too much Capitalism," it's that there is too much government and in result, too little capitalism. Too much government has led to Crony Capitalism and that's exactly what you speak out against. You should blame the government for the current economic environment, not the corporations, the government solely let this happen and regulated this mess. Letting the government get bigger through more taxes and revenue will ultimately compound the problems in our society.

Your view on capitalism is shewed. True capitalism hasn't existed in this country ever since the government started nationalizing our economy.
