Israeli police attack funeral procession for shot journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh

Journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh was shot in the head on Wednesday morning in the West Bank city of Jenin during what her colleagues at the scene said was a burst of Israeli fire on a small group of journalists covering an expected Israeli military raid.

Now, there is video of Police beating those walking her casket into the church for her ceremony. The attack is severe enough that those carrying the casket lost balance and dropped the casket.



This is a longer view of the police involvement. You can watch the police assault the group carrying the casket as they tried to get the 20 feet to enter a church, bodily pull people out of the hearse, and other grossly humiliating behavior. The police screen anyone who wants to walk the couple blocks to the service - but they ask each person whether they are Israeli or Muslim. If they are Muslim, they can not pass.


These people are trying to honor the death of a well known journalist who is part of their community.

I am ignoring the pro Palestinian propaganda speeches on the video which is annoying and counterproductive. The less propagandists say, the more the images do the talking.

Still, this is stupid. Its all about controlling the political and propaganda narrative behind the death and burial of a Al Jazeera journalist who died covering the war. It shows me that Israel is not secure in its sense of democracy, or more accurately the free speech aspect behind any vibrant democracy. They are just too threatened and insecure to tolerate not maintaining control of their narrative or containing crosscurrent narratives by opponents of the Israeli govt or policies.

Israel cannot win the hearts and minds of anyone outside of Israel by attacking mourners around a coffin no matter how cynically they or we are expected to see these 'mourners' as political performative artists exploiting the death for their own agenda. It reminds me of scenes outside of Chicago in front of Democratic Convention in 1968 or Kent State University. The ones with the guns, the uniforms and the power to hurt or bully, will always lose to the ones without. Religious imagery will always win over secular power. Coffins and sobbing women and children beat batons, shields. The images simply overpower any explanation. this will mean a lot more dollars and a lot more support from fellow Arab and muslim state actors which is the opposite result.

They should have just let them have their public funeral unmolested.

A common problem. There is no reason for police to attack a funeral. No good reason, no bad reason. So the police were dealing with something that happened at that funeral that, apparently, wasn't reported. This poster doesn't help himself by posting this kind of garbage.
