I stumbled on this recently. Wow, the Japanese are the most sexless people in the world. So much so that the government is worried because of the low birthrate. Married people are not having sex all that much. And young people have sworn off marriage. And believe or not, a good number of men have adopted celibacy. If you want to read more, google herbivore men in Japan.

Japan's fertility rate in 2012 recorded a 16-year high of 1.41, caused by second generation baby-boomers, and some other Asian countries' birthrates are much lower. But Japan still needs a birthrate of 2.07 in order to maintain its current population.

    You win. LOL.

I did not know this. Maybe they still have sex. Just with condoms and birth control pills at the same time.

But what I found interesting is that in the youtube video link above, the study said that 30% of Japanese youth have said no to sex. Of those, 10% said that they despise sex. DESPISE sex! They must have done it wrong the first time and decided that it's not for them. And these are young men who say that.

Japenese men are married to their EverQuest subscriptions.

On a more serious note Japanese people work and study much longer hours than Americans, and have little free time, so they likely have less time to pursue relationships.

Part of the reason is that housing is so expensive in Japan. Young adults cannot afford to start families or have more children. And Japanese girls are materialistic and often won't live with a man unless he has enough money to settle down with her. Renting an apartment is ridiculously expensive, and the living spaces are often very small.

Perhaps the last thing Japan needs is more people. The older generation tends to hold most of the wealth, and most of the job opportunities do not pay very much compared to the high cost of living in the cities.

This entry gives a figure for the average number of children that would be born per woman if all women lived to the end of their childbearing years and bore children according to a given fertility rate at each age. The total fertility rate (TFR) is a more direct measure of the level of fertility than the crude birth rate, since it refers to births per woman. This indicator shows the potential for population change in the country. A rate of two children per woman is considered the replacement rate for a population, resulting in relative stability in terms of total numbers. Rates above two children indicate populations growing in size and whose median age is declining. Higher rates may also indicate difficulties for families, in some situations, to feed and educate their children and for women to enter the labor force. Rates below two children indicate populations decreasing in size and growing older. Global fertility rates are in general decline and this trend is most pronounced in industrialized countries, especially Western Europe, where populations are projected to decline dramatically over the next 50 years.

A country needs a young, relatively healthy workforce to keep the wealth generating. The "wealth" held by the old people won't mean much if Japan's GDP begins to decline as their workforce shrinks.
