By that time, they're going to have realized that this is a dangerous profession, and there is no way to eliminate all risk. And when you get that call, you have to take it. You go. This is putting duty first, going home safe second.
I've never disagreed with an instructor or professor, or expressed any kind of feelings in the classroom. I agree, if you take the job you got to go, when it involves climbing an icy 140' ladder up a water tower, or going into combat.

There was a time when very few cop killers were taken alive. A person who had been a paramedic in Dallas who has been one of those retrieving a dead guy from a police shoot-out about 40 years ago explained how it used to be there. He told me he asked the Country coroner how he could possibly list the guy in the police shoot-out had died of "suicide by gun" on the official death certificate, when the guy was dead from being shot 5 times in the chest thru the windshield of the car he was trying to get away in. He said the coroner replied matter-of-fact with a perfectly straight face: "If someone shoots at the Dallas Police Department that person has committed suicide." That was the official policy of the coroner's office. Any death by police when the person had shot at the police was recorded as "suicide" on the death certificate. He said on another occasion he answered a paramedic call for someone shot during a police shoot out who was still alive. He said the police pulled him away with "what the hell are you doing?! He was shooting at us." To some police, its like someone was shooting at your family members. Circumstances considered, time to time I'd be ok with that. I guess times have changed - some places anyway. The days before video cameras and cell phones is all but vanished.
Being a police officer is safer than a hundred different professions, though there is great danger. I've seen those horrible training videos where they have exercises where they prove that if you didn't shoot someone in a position to possibly pull a gun, the officer would have died. Training "SHOOT FAST TO ANY DANGER." I hate that. ANYONE ANYWHERE could suddenly pull a gun and kill a cop - justifying literally gunning down anyone. I hate those videos and that training. I believe that training is behind some of the innocent and unarmed people shot and killed by police. "I was afraid" is not enough justification to kill someone, there has to be more than that.
In all the years I was on the street I trained and prepared for the worst. But there was something I always knew ... If someone just wanted to kill a cop, it would be pretty easy. If you call, they'll come, and they take thousands of routine calls from law-abiding citizens all the time. You could get taken down by a sudden close-in ambush or with a deer rifle from 200 yards out. You don't necessarily completely forget about these possibilities, but you can't do business quaking in fear and paranoid of everyone either. So, you just accept it and do your job. And part of that job is to be lawful, ethical, and in control of yourself. I can't even count the number of times I felt fear. And when that happens, you just do your job anyway, and you don't just blast everyone near you because you were afraid. Seth
