What was the last cruiser (ship, not tank) purchased by the Royal Australian Navy?

 

That would be HMAS Perth, formerly HMS Amphion, a modified Leander-class light cruiser, the last of three Leanders bought by the RAN.

What was the last British-built capital ship sunk in WW2?

 

This sounds like a trick question to me. If you were referring to a ship of the Royal Navy you wouldn't have used "British-built" in your question. That reference leads me to suspect that you are asking about a ship built by the British, but commissioned in another navy at the time of its sinking.

On the other hand if you are referring to a Royal Navy ship I would guess HMS Pathfinder, British Destroyer sunk 11 February 1945 by aircraft off Ramree Island, Burma.

 

Destroyers aren't capital ships. Generally for capital ships you're looking at the likes of battleships, battlecruisers, aircraft carriers..........

I suppose it would be to obvious if it was the Hood? Or the Renown?

I am terrible with names, and I am trying to remember time frames. I believe the Hood was sunk before the Renown(or was it Repulse?) and the Prince of Wales(?) were sunk by the Japanese.

Then there was the Battleship sunk at Scapa Flow by the U-boat- one of the most daring raids of of WW2- started with a "W"?

But I suspect it is something more devious than those...not going to cheat and look it up but i am tempted.

 

I am going to say the Kongo.

It was the lead ship of the Kongo class battle cruisers that were designed in Britian before WW1...but only Kongo was actually built in Britian. The last 3 were built in Japan.

 

Actually, the battleship sunk at Scapa Flow was the Royal Oak (sunk by U-47) in 1939.

It was a daring raid, IMO.

Actually, I was thinking of cruisers that were sunk. But I guess cruisers are not technically capital ships.

And your post got me thinking about battleships and aircraft carriers...then I remembered the Kongo was just mentioned earlier in this thread and bingo....assuming that is the right answer.

It sank on November 21, 1944 (I had to look the date up).

 

Yes, it is the battlecruiser Kongo...the last foreign-built capital ship in the Japanese Navy. DA got it.

What size was the largest AA specific ammunition that was used in battle?

The Germans had a planned frontier across Russia for 1942. It was the obligation of the Wehrmacht to reach that line. They reached that line at only one point of the entire line. Which is it?

Or was that the 1941 Barbarossa objectives only?

 

If you are speaking of used as AA ammunition- that would be 18".

Ammo for the Yamato and Musashi designed specifically for their 18" guns- as I recall essentially like giant shotgun shells- and completely ineffective.

For me, WW2 has fascinated me since I was about 8...not exactly sure why.
