It's the classic 2x4, and the target is the enemie's head.

What's this modern form of a classic standard?

I'll go medieval. Actually, late renaissance. Design and implementation of this thing are shown. What is it called? You all know the word, you just may not know it refers to this.

My guess is that it has to do with ancient door breaching. A powder horn, cannon ball, and a kind of muzzle with a stick to prop it into place. Not sure the name, but I would guess that it is used to force it's way into the doorway there.

Correct on the function. And the name is "petard". As in "hoisted by his own". I had thought a petard was like a pair of suspenders, but it's actually this old sort of gunpowder shaped-charge door-breaching weapon. It was very dangerous for the guy planting it, who apparently had to stand off to the side (to avoid the blowback) and set it off with a stick-thing. Hence the chance of being blown up and sent flying, or "hoisted".

That looks a lot like an M-109 Paladin. So if I have to guess, that is probably some kind of system used during the testing to give information like muzzle velocity.

The Kalinin K-7. Ukranian. You're right... it's fascinating.

PS: The desinger, Konstantin Kalinin, was executed by Stalin in 1938 for being an "enemy of the state". Geez.
