They could certainly be tried as adults. It's dependent on the state as to whether or not they will though. The problem with our system is that it doesn't seem to take into account how to deal with minors that commit serious crimes. When you try a minor as an adult, usually the prosecution is at a disadvantage, which is why it's more common for them to try them as minors. However, punishments for minors tend to be less severe even for serious crimes.
Supposing that the attackers were black, would it be crazy to assume that the victims race had anything to do with him being attacked?

Because this is now an urban pattern.Not to discount the fact of hoods from the 50's doing the exact same thing.But it now is classified as a Societal problem. If not nipped in the bud it will continue to escalate. Have City Councils charter draconian laws of severity for such offense.
