…America does have a debt problem and advocated for an agreement to raise the debt ceiling “as long as we agree to identify the debt we have and how we start reducing it.”

Manchin stated, “I think what we have to do is realize that we have a problem. We have a debt problem. … And all we’re saying is should we not make sure that we all recognize how we got there, how we prevent from going further? So, let’s take our trust — the trust funds, Medicare, Social Security, or our Highway Trust, you can’t let those go defunct as far as — and what we’re saying is, we have a TRUST Act, and we would put different committees, bipartisan, bicameral committees together to look at each one of the trusts and come up with solutions of how you fix it. We’re not getting rid of anything and you can’t scare the bejesus out of people saying we’re going to get rid of Social Security…that’s not going to happen…

    A
plan to reduce future debt must be a part of any deal to raise the debt ceiling now. It’s not too much to ask. It must be made clear that some sort of compromise on that is essential to any deal to raise the debt ceiling by even one cent.

We can make a deal to protect trust funds and the programs they support, reduce deficits elsewhere, and raise the debt ceiling.

I think he’s been reasonably consistent on that point most of his career. Biden’s demand today of an unconditional debt ceiling increase is a non starter. DOA…

Before we can start reducing the debt, we have to start reducing the deficit. Baby steps. My guess: The GOP will impose some draconian budget reductions, which will lead to a recession. That will help them to regain full power in 2024, at which point all talks about the debt will be forgotten, and they will again blow up the deficit by imposing another tax cut, while keeping spending like drunken sailors. We've seen it before, i.e. Reagan, GWB, Trump.

It’s fascinating how so many Americans are so pathetically stupid that this tactic keeps working on them. Could be why Republicans hate history so much

You are technically correct that Winston put that spin on that concept, but I like to give this guy the attribution for the idea

    SNIP
In a 1948 speech to the House of Commons, Churchill paraphrased Santayana when he said ‘Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.’
    ENDSNIP

Original Version - "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - George Santayana 1905

Either version is correct when dealing with the GOP

Being accountable to his voters would be supporting the 100th+ time this ridiculous concept has been extended since 1962...

Why? What did trump do to get it raised? Deficit didn’t go down under him.

I am not especially in favor of debt ceiling fights. The optics are not good. That said, would you rather a blue dog Democrat or a Republican hold the seat? If he doesn't signal distinction from the Democrats on some issues he will not win the seat.

WV is one of the most conservative states in the country. You are lucky to have a blue dog Democrat there.

He's signaled more distinctions than commonality as far as I can tell..... There are plenty of places he can separate himself from regular Democrats in WVA (Energy, Guns, Climate, Voting rights, Child Tax Credit etc etc etc)

This needn't be one of them....

I'm fine that he's still in Congress, but I hope that equally silly chick in Arizona and the election of Rev Warnock dilute his overstated power...

It's worth remembering he votes with Biden's preferred bills almost 90% of the time as of this January. This is compared to under 70% for Susan Collins, the most liberal voting Republican.

So, given how tight the Senate is, he probably is getting 20% of all bills over the line with his strategy, as compared to the alternative of a moderate Republican.

I really do think that when the dust settles on this era of Congress (and the immediate repulsion of him being less left than the party would like), he will be held in high regard by Democrats.

Manchin is a conman, same as most politicians, regardless of party.

I always point out what I think should be obvious - the debt is intentional.

It has always been the long range plan of the Establishment globalists to collapse the existing system, and with it all existing national currencies.

Many of the Globalists are now meeting in Davos, Switzerland, and I'm sure planning the collapse in the next 5-8 years is on the table. It has been decades in the making, but we're getting nearer and nearer to the launch.

I expect it will be very messy, very bloody, and take several years to implement fully once the plug is pulled on our current paradigm.

ESG, One World Currency, cashless society, instantaneous debit, ability of a centrally controlled system to lock people out, rationing, price controls, etc.

A lot of the framework is being put in place now, but an awful lot of infrastructure needs to be built up to realize the level of control over the masses that the Elites are envisioning for themselves.

George Orwell was indeed a prophet.

    4 years hence, 2027...

The debt will be at $44 trillion
SS and Medicare will be at $70 trillion
Unfunded liabilities will be at $234 trillion

As crazy as those numbers are, it has to be even crazier for anyone to think it is not intentional.

Manchin just voted for the Biden big "infrastructure" bill spending money like a drunken sailor and now talks about the US having a debt problem? These politicians have no shame pandering to the low information types.

Federal spending in FY 2022 included very nearly 22% deficit spending. The national debt has now reached over 30 TRILLION dollars.
    https://www.usgovernmentspending.com/federal_deficit_percent_spending

Our leadership is all but guaranteeing America's economic and social collapse some time in our grandkids' lifetime. This is suicidal and will result in a whole lot more than draconian measures to deal with.

Well, trump was responsible for creating 25% of all our national debt as potus, but they didn’t care then. It’s all partisan bullshit with these people.
Kevin’s grandstanding will come back to bite him in the ass.
