Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) is stepping down from his leadership post in November, ending his history-setting tenure as longest serving Senate party leader.

McConnell, who turned 82 this month, is announcing the decision in a speech on the Senate floor.

It's unclear why he would make an announcement now of stepping down in November. He will be a "lame duck" from now until then. There may be pressure for him to step down sooner, as rivals begin their campaigns to replace him.

the story should stop at 82 years of age. Get out and take the other fossils with you; yes, from both sides of the aisle

A great man. The most consequential Republican since Ronald Reagan. I wish him well.

I wish him the best in his retirement and thank him for his years of service to our country. IMO he should have retired close to 20 years ago. We really need term limits and age limits for politicians.

Yeah he was effective and probably meant well. Too bad he was wrong about almost everything in terms of policy. Paraphrasing him he said something about one of life's most underappreciated talents being knowing when to move on to the next chapter. Thought that was a funny understatement considering our presidential candidates.

I will always be grateful to Mitch McConnell for successfully guiding the addition of three new, ORIGINALIST Justices to the Supreme Court to counter the liberal revisionists installed by Obama.

When he mentioned that it's important to know when to move on, I think his remark was directed at two candidates fore President.
