Rumors of a coup in Beijing Read the article for the full story. While this is definitely something to watch, it made me think of a broader question. Has anyone considered what would happen if all or part of a nation's military defies it's leadership and starts a war on it's own? I'll use Iran here as an example. Hypothetically(since it's all hypothetical at this point), what do you think the consequences on the world stage would be if the Republican Guard began military action against Israel or the U.S. but was not ordered to by Iran's government. They go rogue. Or what about other the military of other countries? China? Russia? France? Britain? Even the U.S.
Since the Iran does not have a common border with Israel, this is pretty much a complete and total non-issue. No military is really seperate from it's government. Either it is subserviant to the government of it's nation, or it is the government of it's nation. If any group decided to "go rogue", either the government will go along with it and back it, or cut it off to the mercy of the other nations.
That's kind of what I was asking. Just some input on the possibility of such a situation and the shape it could take. I do think it's possible that a military could revolt against it's civilian leaders. It was really just a what if question.
That happens al the time, it is called a coup. However, such movements do not involve the military taking off on it's own and invading other nations.
Yes, which is why I mentioned the word hypothetical not once, but twice, in the OP. Just a what if. Use your imagination based on reality.
