Alrighty then, everyone: this is the Metal Music Megathread created for general discussion about metal bands and their albums and songs, posting your fave bands, fave albums and fave songs of any metal subgenre, from regular heavy metal to eardrum-blasting extreme metal, from virtuous christian metal bands to hellishly satanic ones, et cetera... you get the idea. I am aware that there is already a heavy metal thread, but this megathread is for all genres of metal music, including metal-punk fusions like metalcore and grindcore. A few rules for comfort:

    1. Live and let live. If someone's taste on metal is the one you absolutely despise, don't bash the guy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
    2. No trolling, flaming, flamebaiting and so on... please keep it civil. If you can't, don't start it. If you or someone else already started it, don't feed it.
    3. No punk or rock'n'roll allowed here, except for metalcore, grindcore and other metal-punk fusions. Punk bands who also play metal and their metal albums and songs are allowed, but no others. The fine line between hard rock and heavy metal is the limit: no to hard rock, yes to heavy metal.
    4. Have fun and feel free to amend or widen your tastes as you get to know other people's favorite bands. And most importantly: ROCK ON! :rock_slayer:
Alright. Now that that's done, I may as well post my favorite bands to start this thread. I'm warning you, my taste on metal music is very diverse. The main subgenres I listen to are heavy metal, alternative metal, nu metal, (post-)grunge, neoclassical metal, power metal, melodic death metal, symphonic metal, progressive metal, speed metal and thrash metal.

My absolute faves are Alice In Chains, Amen, Amorphis, Anthriel, Apocalyptica, Arch Enemy, Circle of Dust, Demon Hunter, Disturbed, Divinefire, Dream Theater, Drowning Pool, Evanescence, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Mushroomhead, Narnia, Nightwish, Otep, Porcupine Tree, Queensrÿche, Rage Against The Machine, RED, Rush, Slipknot, Stratovarius, System Of A Down, Theocracy, Tool, and Waltari. That is a truckload of good bands in my opinion.

My favorite albums are usually the first ones, because the older the better. Same with songs.

What about you? What enthralls you in metal music? What kind of subgenres, bands, albums and songs do you desire? Why do you not desire a certain subgenre, band, album or song? All kind of civil discussion related to metal music is appreciated. Ready, set, GO! :icon_jawdrop:

I'm too old for sub genres. ;) I guess my preference overall would be progressive anything, but with metal a bit on the avant garde side but I haven't done much exploring. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum would be on that list.
I want to listen to Opeth and Death more. what I like the most in other kinds of music, I don't really listen to as much. I end up listening to some 80's and 90's metal I've discovered recently (I would have loved to have the internet back then) often because I'm not as intently listening. I have distractions like driving but I like the energy. Its fun.
Metallica and Tool are solid likes.

I used to be big into progressive metal when I was younger, but a lot of it doesn't do much for me anymore. I still like good black metal, but I don't listen to it that often these days either. I still enjoy most subgenres, but for the most part, traditional thrash, New York hardcore, and melodic death metal are my favorites.

As for bands (assuming we're counting non-metal subgenres like nu-metal, industrial, and crossover):

    In Flames
    Life of Agony
    Samael
    Moonspell
    Type O Negative
    Pantera
    Biohazard
    Prong
    Soilwork
Napalm Death (mid-90s era: Diatribes through Leaders Not Followers Vol. 1)
    Sepultura
    Dimmu Borgir
    Anthrax (John Bush era)
    Queensryche
    Body Count
    Iron Maiden
    Corrosion of Conformity
    Fear Factory
    Damageplan
    Danzig
    Arcturus
    Emperor
    Strapping Young Lad
    Killswitch Engage
    Lamb of God
    Pro-Pain
    Alexisonfire
    Old Man's Child
    Sonic Syndicate
    Suicidal Tendencies
    Therapy?
    Amen
    Ministry
    Faith No More
    Korn
    Mudvayne
    The Melvins (first two albums)
    AxCx
    Coal Chamber
    Sevendust
    The Deftones
    Helmet
    Genghis Tron

Yes we are. This thread being a 'megathread' of sorts, we allow metal-punk-crossovers (e.g. metalcore, deathcore, grindcore) and 'non-metal' subgenres. Puritanism isn't a strict no-no, but live and let live is a strict yes-yes. The line between metal and 'non-metal'/'poser metal'/'self-proclaiming metal' or whatever can be a bit hazy at times, but there is one clear line and that's between heavy metal and hard rock and that's enough of a limit here.

I am more into Gothic and of course Greek metal with a bit of symphonic, folk and Russian, the list will be too long so this is what i am listening lately :
    Alkonost
    Anabantha
    Blackthorn
    Sirenia
    Fu XI
    Korpiklaani
    Meden Agan
    The Agonist
    Dimmu Borgir
    Manegram
and of course everything from all time classic Anorexia Nevrosa

Another NOISE INT. fan , living in Canada justifies how the hell you know Voivod but it doesn't justify how you know all those European bands.
    :D

I remember when Metal was born....when it was simply "Heavy Metal".

We would have called the above genre "Death Metal", and it was a bit more intense with less melody involved. This was what we considered Metal:

Iron Maiden is one of the first and of the few large venue shows Ive seen. I was about 12 yrs old. I went for either the Scorpions or Judas Priest. (I saw them both that year)
I remember it being a high energy show with really impressive musicianship but I hadn't really listened to them much before or after that. I always thought of them as a guy's band; seems odd when others didn't.

As far as the older bands go I know Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple are sometimes called metal bands now. I can kind of understand that but not Rush.

I've finally found someone else who likes Moonspell. I thought I was the only one.

Hell yeah! Dude, those guys are so underrated. I've been listening to them since around Irreligious or Sin/Pecado. I was just jamming the Antidote in my car earlier today.
