"(CNN)At least 29 people have died after the most powerful earthquake to hit Mexico in a century struck off the country's southern coast.

The magnitude-8.1 quake, which was felt as far as Mexico City and Guatemala City, was registered off Mexico's southern coast just as heavy rains from Hurricane Katia lashed the east. The epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, some 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) southeast of the capital and 74 miles (120 kilometers) from the Pacific coast."

Boy, things seem to be getting interesting this year. Let's see how Mexico is going to handle the somewhat extensive damage this caused. I believe we're going to see massive ineptitude by the local and federal governments in Mexico.

Although it was huge, it is probably not as 'bad' as it would have been if it had been further north. The quake was not on a tectonic plate boundary... it was entirely within the Cocos Plate. I would have been very concerned if it had been further north, on the Pacific Plate, or on a boundary with it.

Also, it was 24 miles deep, which is considered 'intermediate'. So, not terribly deep, although not a little surface "wiggler", either. It occurred in an offshore location called the Bay of Tehuantepec, so, it was somewhat isolated from the overall tectonic plate array in that area of the planet.

At first I had been concerned that a Pacific coast quake of that size just off Mexico could trigger long-expected BIG quakes on the Elsinore, Rose Canyon, and San Andreas Faults in Southern California. Now, I don't envision a follow-on effect. Which is good -- some of my favorite seafood restaurants are in San Diego.... But, thanks to Fukushima, I don't eat much seafood any more....

I still think that the next big ass-ripper of an earthquake in the U. S. will be on the Hayward Fault, which runs right under Oakland, California. The famous 1906 San Francisco quake put enormous extra strain on the Hayward, and it's been building -- especially after the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. Now, at some point in the future, when the Hayward breaks, it will EPIC....

Hope they don't expect help from us? We are already hosting millions of their citizens that are needed back home right now.

September 26, 2017 — On paper at least, the Mexico City school appeared to be structurally sound and built to withstand a major earthquake. But it collapsed, killing 26 people, most of them children. Authorities are now looking into whether an apartment reportedly built on top of the two-story school was to blame.
