MG made this announcement in Thailand, but it is expected that they will roll it out to all of it's markets. Four of their popular models are covered by this guarantee. https://www.msn.com/en-xl/news/othe...lifetime-warranty-for-four-models/ar-BB1q1UNn The highlight of the warranty is its unlimited mileage coverage and also the lifetime warranty is not limited to the car's first owner. It is applicable to both new and current MG customers. The announcement on the extended lifetime warranty is considered MG's significant movement that creates a turning point in Thailand's EV industry. The four EV models are equipped with the latest battery technology developed by SAIC Motor Corp. With the "Rubik's Cube Battery", the Cell-To-Pack battery aligns the battery cells horizontally to save space and enhance ventilation for better EV efficiency and driving experience. The battery innovation has recently been awarded at the 2023 National Science and Technology Progress Award in China. The company has extended its lifetime warranty to cover High-Voltage Battery (HV BATTERY ASSY), Electric Drive Unit (EDU) and Power Electronic Bloc (PEB). MG is owned by SAIC Motor Corporation. For years, they were the leading importer of Chinese vehicles in Europe with their popular models. In 2024, they announced that they are favoring Northern Spain for a new European car factory.
A lifetime warranty is only so good as long as the company stays in business. With an up-and-coming new company that specializes in a newer technology type of car, there is not so much of a guarantee that company will stay in business longer than 4 years. Some of this warranty could be a bit of a pyramid scheme. The new company needs money now to try to expand growth, even if that lifetime warranty will theoretically end up costing them more than the amount of money they get from it now. The MG brand is owned by the Chinese state-owned company SAIC Motor, based in Shanghai. They bought the brand from a British company in 2005. (SAIC produces some of the MG cars in Thailand, for the local market there) So the real question is if you think the MG brand is expendable and will last. Agree, agree, agree. Still, for an established name-brand like MG, the lifetime warranty shows an extreme confidence in the latest battery technologies.
That gives domestic manufacturers a break, but how long is it going to last? If China makes better cars, the US population isn't going to drive worse or more expensive cars as a personal sacrifice to some governmental trade war. How long would we put up with a tariff on all smartphones except the Librem 5 USA - the only smartphone made in America?
China does not make "better" cars. China makes cheaper cars. Too bad factories in America would have to pay wage levels five times higher than what they are in China. And too bad America has so many environmental protection and labor regulations that make it much more expensive than China. Not to even mention all the crazy lawsuits in America, with excessively gigantic payouts of money, which all the wacky Lefties in America approve of (despite the irony of China being run by a Communist government). I agree. If we address those issues, then no reason why America should not get its cars from China. (hope you can sense sarcasm)
I would, too. Plus, they are providing a good variety of car types. However, I'm attracted to the Tesla self driving capability. At this point, I'd like as many eyes on what I'm doing as possible - lol!
